Oral practice






1. Go round the class as in example below. Each person has to repeat what was said before and add on another item. Try not to say the same quantity more than once. Example:

 

I went to the shops and bought some cakes.

I went to the shops and bought some cakes and a kilo of…

I went to the shops and bought some cakes and bought a kilo of… and a few….

 

2. Write down what you eat and drink at mealtimes and for snacks on a typical day.Then interview a partner and add details of his\her eating habits

3. Work with another pair and give details about yourself and your partner. Say:

 

a) how much meat or fish you eat on a typical day.

b) how many sweet things you eat.

c) how much you drink.

d) what you eat a lot of.

e) What you eat a little of

f) whether you think you have a healthy diet(Give reasons).

4. Look at the “Checklist for Healthy Eating” and the examples below. Discuss in groups. What do you think you eat too much of? What do you think you don’t eat enough of? Example:

 

Paul eats chocolate all the time. He eats too much chocolate.

He hardly ever eats any fruit. He doesn’t eat enough fruit.

He eats chips every day. He eats too many chips.

 

6.HOW MUCH? HOW MANY?

 

Underline the correct alternative and then fill in the gaps with the correct alternatives:

a) some /any

 

i) We use SOME/ANY in affirmative sentences:

I want … bread.

 

ii) We use SOME/ANY in sentences with a negative meaning:

 

I never drink … alcohol. I don’t want … mineral water, thanks.

 

iii) In requests and offers when we want the answer YES we use SOME/ANY:

 

Would you like… cake?

 

b) much/many/ a few/ a little

i) We use much/many and a few/ a little with uncountable nouns:

 

“Is there … wine left? ”

“No, there’s only…”

 

ii) We use much/many and a few/ a little with countable nouns:

 

There are not… cans of beer left and there are only … cartons of orange juice.

 

 

ORAL PRACTICE

1.Look at the menu. Decide what you would choose for the:

-first course

-main course

-dessert.

2. Are there any dishes you would definitely not choose?

Example:

I wouldn’t choose any of the meat dishes because I’m vegetarian.
