A virus is a set of illicit instructions that infects other programs and may spread quickly. Viruses can destroy all your data. Some viruses wait until some certain date before becoming active. For example Michelangelo becomes active on the 6th of March, Jerusalem - each Friday the 13th. Other viruses act as soon as they are in your computer.

An antivirus program stops the spread of the virus. It scans a floppy disk for infection and cleans your files if they have viruses. Viruses are often spread through shared disks. If you don't want to get a virus, first, test a floppy disk by an antivirus program. Second, don't download free of charge information from Internet. New viruses constantly appear. So, third, constantly update your antivirus program to protect your system against new viruses.
