Databases

Database software makes it possible for computers to store large amounts of data. A database is organized into three levels: files, records, and fields. A file contains a group of records. A record stores a group of fields, which concerns some specifications such as a person, place, or thing.

Each field has a field name, size, and type. Field size determines the maximum number of characters or digits that can be stored in a field. Data type determines the kind of operation the computer can perform on the data. It can be alphanumeric, numeric, logical, or date.

A request for data in a database is a query. A simple query identifies a field and searches for all records that match the field name.
