Контрольное задание № 4

ДЕЛОВОЙ ИНОСТРАННЫЙ ЯЗЫК

ВАРИАНТ 1

1 Прочитайте текст презентации о компании Flicker и переведите на русский язык.

Hi. I’m Hal Bonelli, I’m Managing Director of Flicker and I’d like to tell you something about my company. As you know, we are looking for new investment to help us expand our activities, and I’m very much hoping that some of you here today will see what an exciting opportunity this is for you to invest with us.

So, first I’m going to give you some general information about the company. Then I’ll go on to explain how we plan to expand in the future. And finally, I’ll add in some figures so you know what you can expect to gain from your investment. Let me start with some background.

Flicker is best known as a manufacturer of cigarette lighters. But as you know, not so many people in the US smoke cigarettes these days. Sales of cigarette lighters are down. Ten years ago, our sales of lighters totalled 160 million dollars; but today, our sales are only 120 million. Ten years ago, we employed twelve hundred people at our main factory in Ohio in the US. Now, we employ only seven hundred fifty in that factory. However, we think we can still sell this product, and our strategy is to move into new markets in Europe, Russia and China. For example, we now have a factory in China where we make lighters for the Chinese market. At present, our sales in China come to only eight million dollars, but this is a very big market and we expect sales to increase rapidly.

At the same time, we have decided to move into new industry sectors. We are using our experience and expertise in making lighters to develop new products with similar technology. For example, we are now developing a new kind of lighter which you can use to light a barbecue or a fire when camping. We plan to go still further and to sell other kinds of camping equipment. We even plan to sell such products as clothing and luggage in the future, which is something completely new for us.

So – how do we plan to do all this? Let me give you a more detailed look at our plans…

NATURA LOOKING FOR GROWTH OUTSIDE OF BRAZIL

Natura, a fast-expanding Brazilian cosmetics company that specialises in making ‘natural’ products from trees in the Amazon rainforest, is considering starting sales operations in the UK, USA and Russia as part of an international expansion plan.

Alessandro Carlucci, Natura’s chief executive, says he would like to see the company gain at least 10 per cent of its annual sales from outside Brazil within five years. The percentage of international sales is currently 3 per cent.

‘We think there is a lot of space in the cosmetics industry to grow and we think we have good products that will appeal to consumers in other countries, ’ Mr Carlucci said.

The company has a team of 15 people, based in the UK, USA and Russia, who are exploring ways to start selling cosmetics in these places, probably through groups of self-employed agents.

Natura’s store in Paris, which opened last year, plans to recruit in the coming months about 50 sales agents in France. Mr Carlucci says the store in France is an ‘experiment’ to test interest by consumers outside Latin America in Natura’s products.

He declined to provide details of Natura’s sales in France, but said he was ‘very happy’ with the results so far.

How to create demand

Lipstick that can change colour according to a woman’s feelings: blue when she is angry, red when happy. A machine that can paint a woman’s nails in exactly the same pattern as her dress: these are the ideas of the future, according to Jean-Paul Agon, chief executive of L’Oré al, the world’s biggest cosmetics company.

Mr Agon wants scientists and marketers to work together to maintain the French group’s remarkable growth. ‘It is not always by asking people what they want that you find the big idea, ’ he says.

L’Oré al is at its best when introducing or inventing a product that the consumer later comes to love. Mr Agon therefore believes that L'Oré al has a lot in common with companies such as Apple Computer and Nokia.

‘Before the invention of cellphones and iPods, nobody thought they needed one, but now that they exist, everybody believes that they make life better. Beauty is a little the same, ’ Mr Agon says.
