Practice with Articles, Demonstratives and other Determiners

Ask yourself these questions when checking articles and demonstratives and note some aspects of the subject.

1. When and where do we use determiners?

· Determiners are used at the beginning of a noun group, in front of numbers or adjectives.

We met the two Swedish politicians in London.

Have you heard about another theoretical approach?

Other models and theories are broader than concepts.

· We use specific determiners when people know exactly which things or people we are talking about, or they have already been mentioned.

The political scientist studies the state.

These concepts, models and theories are the tools for political analysis.

The specific determiners are:

the definite article the
demonstratives this - these, that - those
possessives my your his her its our their

· We use general determiners to talk about people or things for the first time, or to talk about them generally without saying exactly who or what they are.

There was a politician in the room.

They studied an ancient society.

We can our discussion at any time we want.

The general determiners are:

a other both every fewer much most some
an any each enough little many no several
another all either few less more neither

· You can use some general determiners with:

singular countable nouns

a an another any each either every neither no

plural countable nouns

all enough fewer many most both no
any few other more some several

uncountable nouns

all enough little most no any less more much some

· The following general determiners can never be used with uncountable nouns.

a another every either few many
an both each neither a few several

Exercise 1

If the underlined word or words are used incorrectly, make correction.

1. The term political science is more popular in North America than in any another country in the world.

2. One of the two major founding fathers of “political philosophy” is Plato and other is Aristotle.

3. Another goods, such as furniture, or refrigerators, last longer.

4. Teaching is yet another action called service.

5. Some goods are bought for personal use while another are bought for resale.

6. Amongst other recent theoretical approaches to politics is what is called formal political theory, variously known as 'political economy', 'public-choice theory’ and 'rational-choice theory'.

7. Another advice will help you to develop a useful personal budget.

8. One theoretical approach may have a broader impact on political analysis while another may have no influence at all.
