WRITING: AN INFORMAL LETTER

№ 1

An informal letter is a letter to an English-speaking friend. In this kind of letter we may use:

• a friendly and personal tone

• contracted verb forms like I'm and hasn't

• phrasal verbs

• informal expressions such as a bit (for '.a little')

• fewer polite expressions like (would be most grateful if you would... (we would probably say Could you... or Will you... instead)

• fewer passive verb forms

Can you think of anything else to add to this list?

№ 2

Study these instructions. Then read the sample letter. Find and correct six mistakes.

You have recently done an exciting sports or leisure activity for the first lime. Write to an English-speaking penfriend, describing what you did and how you felt. Write your letter in 120-180 words in an appropriate style. Do not write any addresses.

I must tell you about a really amazed experience I had yesterday. It was our day off so we went to an old airfield near Oxford and flew in a microlight! I was with Jane, who is very friendly instructor. First we went across grass very quickly, shaking a lot. Then we were in the air with only the noise of the engine and I thought 'I hope this thing doesn't stop' because when I looked down I saw it was a long way. After that we flew over some trees and suddenly we started to drop. Jane said it was because the air was colder there and it always happened like that, but I was terrifying and at that moment I wished I had stayed on ground. At last we came down. Our landing was hard but the first thing I said when I got out was 'When can I do this again? ' It was the wonderful fun. Please write soon to tell me your news.

№ 3

Read the letter again. Which words or sentences:

a say why the sender is writing?

b tell you the order in which things happened?

c ask for a reply?

№ 4

Put an English name and other details in the spaces in the letter in activity 2. For the beginning and ending, choose from these:

Dear Sir, Dear Mr / Ms / Mrs / Miss (surname), Dear (first name), Yours faithfully, Yours sincerely, Yours, Best wishes, Regards, Love.

When would the others be appropriate?

№ 5

Look at expressions a-h and match them with purposes 1-8.

a That reminds me, b I'm really sorry I с I'd better close now d Please let me know e why don't you f I'm glad to hear that g I look forward to hearing from you h Many thanks for your letter 1 to finish the letter 2 to ask for information 3 to comment on good news 4 to change the subject 5 to ask for a reply 6 to apologize 7 to thank them for writing 8 to suggest or invite

№ 6

Read through this extract from an informal letter. Then fill in each of the gaps with one of expressions a-h above.

1.................................. which arrived this morning just when I was thinking of you! 2................................. haven't written sooner, but there have been so many things to catch up on since I got back. 3................................. you're keeping well, and I hope that by the time this quick note gets there you will have sorted out that problem you talked about. 4................................. if there's any way I can help. Life here goes on very much as always, though my exams are getting alarmingly close! 5..................................how are your First Certificate studies going? What do you find easy and what's not so easy? Doing an advanced course here in the UK next summer sounds like a great idea. If you have any time off, 6................................. come and stay with me for a few days? Anyway, 7................................. as I've got a mountain of work to do and it's getting a bit late, so I'll say 'bye' for the moment and 8................................. soon.

№ 7

Write a reply to the sender of the letter in activity 6 in 100-140 words. Follow this plan:

• Use an appropriate beginning from activity 4.

• Thank your friend for writing, apologize for taking a long time to reply and say why.

• Ask how he / she is and say how you are.

• Thank him / her for the offer of help and say if you need it or not.

• Talk about your First Certificate studies. Be honest in your answers!

• Thank him / her for the invitation and say if you can accept or not.

• Explain why you have to stop writing now and say when you hope to see him / her again.

• Close with an appropriate ending from activity 4.
