Задание для группы В:

Проанализируйте следующие упражнения и скажите:

А) какие умения они помогают выработать?

Б) на каком этапе формирования умений по письму они могут использоваться?

№ 1 Read

The sentences in this letter have been jumbled up. Put them in the correct order.

a Her name’s Carla and she’s Italian.

b Quite a lot has happened since I last wrote to you. I changed jobs two years ago.

c Dear Ben, How are you? It’s ages since I last wrote, I know.

d Well, I’d better sign off now. It’s getting late.

e Now I’m working for an American Company called GLT Electronics.

f I’m sorry, but as you know, I’m not the best letter-writer in the world.

g Hope to hear from you soon.

h Eva and I split up six months ago. I was very upset at first, but I’m over it now.
I Yours, Charles

j Anyway, I hope you are well.

k Fortunately she speaks English, as I don’t speak any Italian. We’ll see how it goes – I’m not going to rush into anything.

l In fact, I’ve been going out with someone else for the last six weeks.

m Have you heard of them? The pay is quite good so I’m not complaining.

№ 2

You are going to write a letter to a friend you haven't been in touch with for two years. Think about what has happened to you in that time and write notes. Here are some ideas.

• your studies • work

• family • friends

• relationships • purchases (flat,

• future plans car, etc.)

№ 3

Write

1 Write a first draft of your letter using the notes you have made.

2 a Exchange descriptions with another person.

b Read each other's letters. Is your partner's description written in an appropriate style? Is it interesting to read? Suggest one or two improvements.

с Discuss your ideas for improvements. Then write the final version of your letter.

Reminder   • Begin and end the letter in the right way. • Use informal language. • Use a new paragraph for a new topic.

№ 4 Writing

Informal letter

This is part of a letter you have received from a friend who is coming to your country for a month's holiday.

Anyway, I’d appreciate your advice on the best way of getting to your country, as I haven’t got much spare cash. And could you tell me what I should bring? All the best, Andrew

4 А Read the answer below. Underline each sentence or part of a sentence in which you think the writer is giving her friend advice. An example is given.

Dear Andrew, It was great to hear that you're coming over. You can travel by plane or ferry. Why not contact a few travel agents? They sometimes offer cheap flights. Whatever you do, don't book a seat on a scheduled flight, because it's very expensive. If I were you, I'd take the ferry. It's very cheap and reasonably fast. It would be worth bringing another form of identification, like an ID card, because you won't want to carry your passport round all the time. You ought to bring a little English currency with you. in case the banks are shut when you arrive. However, it's a good idea to have mainly traveller's cheques, as they're much safer. By the way, you'll probably find it's well worth getting a student card - you'll be able to get all sorts of discounts, particularly when it comes to travelling around. There's just one other thing - you'd better remember to get in touch with us when you're over here, or we'll be very upset! Love Angela

4 В Notice that the writer gives an explanation for each separate piece of advice. Look again at the letter and say why Angela advises her friend:

• to go round some travel agents

• to bring mainly traveller's cheques

• to take the ferry

• to get in touch

• not to book a scheduled flight

• to get a student card

• to bring an ID card

2 Write down the words the writer uses to link the reason to the advice.

Example: because (it’s very expensive).

№ 5

Here is part of a letter you have received from a penfriend. Write a suitable reply of about 180 words.

Anyway, it means that I’ve now got two months free to learn your language. I’m really looking forward to being able to write to you in your language rather than in mine. Can you give me some advice on how to learn your language quickly?

Read these notes on planning.

1 Before writing your answer, spend a few minutes thinking of at least four pieces of advice you could give your friend. Then make notes on each piece of advice.

2 Look again at the ways of giving advice in the sample answer. Use a different one for each piece of advice in your letter.

3 Organize your letter like this:

• Introduction - thank your friend for the letter, etc.

• Main part of the letter: give your advice, with reasons. Start with the most important points and use paragraphs to separate your ideas.

• Remember to include an informal ending.
