Kiev

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine. Its history goes back to the 5 century. According to the ancient legend Kiev was found by three brothers: Kij, Shchek, Khoriv and their sister Libid. They settled on the heights above the Dnieper and found a city on one of the hills and called it Kiev after the eldest brother. Kiev was a large commercial centre of the East Slavs and was called " the mother of all Russian towns".

Nowadays Kiev is a large political, industrial, scientific and cultural centre. Its population is above 2 million people. Kiev has a well-developed industry. Its factories and plants produce sea and river transport vessels, air liners, computers, motorcycles consumer goods.

 
Kiev is one of the largest scientific centers. The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and many research institutes are famous for their discoveries. More than 50 000 students study at the Shevchenko State University. There are 18 higher educational establishments in Kiev.

Kiev is the center of national Ukrainian culture. Many historical places in Kiev remind us of its ancient history. Among them are the Golden Gate, St. Sophia's Gathedral, St.Vladimir's Gathedral, Kyev-Pechersk Lavra, St. Andrew's Church and many others. If you are keen on fine art you should visit the Museum of Western Art, the Museum of the Ukrainian Culture, The Russian Art Museum. The famous Shevchenko Opera and Ballet House, the Ivan Franko drama Theatre are also here. There are very many cinemas in the city and hundreds of libraries.

Kiev is also the centre of political life in Ukraine. All major political events take place here. Kiev is the seat of the Supreme Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers President of Ukraine lives and works there.

Kiev is a very beautiful city. Only the seventh part of its territory is occupied by buildings. The picturesque green banks and wonderful beaches of the Dnieper are to add much to the beauty of the city. Not only inhabitants of Kiev but all citizens of Ukraine are proud of their capital.

The power in the country is divided into legislative, executive and judiciary. The Supreme Rada of Ukraine is the only body of the legislative power of Ukraine. There are 450 people's deputies who are elected every 4 years on the last week of March.

The highest body of the executive power is the Cabinet of Ministers which is headed by the Prime Minister. It is responsible to the President and is accountable to the Supreme Rada.

Justice in Ukraine is exercised entirely by courts. The judiciary power belongs to the Supreme Court of Ukraine the constitutional court of Ukraine and regional courts.

The state symbols of Ukraine are the national flag and emblem. They root deeply in ancient times and have/ symbolic meaning. Blue-yellow state flag symbolized the unity of the blue sky and yellow wheat field. The little state emblem - trident - appeared first on the seals in time.
