London

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is an ancient city, founded by the Roman Invaders on the rive Thames more than twenty centuries ago.

London is one of the most famous capital cities of the world and every year it attracts crowds of visitors from home and abroad. They come to explore its historical buildings, to see its monuments and galleries, its streets, parks and its people.

Over 8 million people live in London. The city dominates British life. It is theme of the British commerce and finance, the main center of its legal system and its press. It has the largest university and the greatest possibilities for entertainment and sports in the country.

London consists of four parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.

The heart of London is the City, its commercial end business center with bank, offices and the Stock Exchange. Here is situated the Tower of London, that comes first among the historic buildings of the city. In different times this castle was a fortress, a royal palace and a prison; now it is the museum of armour. We can find here the Jewel House.

Westminster is the political centre of London. Here we can see the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British government. Another place of interest is Westminster Abby. Many famous English statesmen, painters and poets are buried there. Across the road there is Westminster Palace, the home of the Queen. On its tower there is Big Ben, the largest clock in the world.

The West End is the richest part of the city with its fashionable houses, art galleries, famous museums, theatres, palaces and parks. Piccadilly Circus is a shopping center. Hyde Park with its Speaker’s Corner, Regent’s Park and Kensington Gardens are Londoner’s favorite resting-places.

The East End is the industrial centre of London. There are a lot of factories, plants and workshops there. This district is inhabited by working classfamilies. A large seaport is situated in the East End. It is an area of docks.

We can also see and admire Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s Column, St.Paul’s Cathedral, Whitehall, official home of prime-ministers since 1731 and many other places of interest.

Once Dr.Johnson said: “When a man is tired of London he is tired of life”.
