Exercise 79. Discuss the following pairs of proverbs. Each pair contains two statements with somewhat opposing meanings. First talk about what the proverbs mean using Gerund. Give an example of each proverb. Then discuss the extent to which you believe it.

1. Haste makes waste. - Strike while the iron is hot.

2. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. - Out of sight out of mind.

3. Pride goeth before a fall. - You’ve got to toot your own horn because nobody else is going to do it for you.

4. A stitch in time saves nine. - He who hesitates is lost.

Exercise 80. Editing

In the following passage, there are sixteen verbs that should be put into a gerund form. Find these verbs and put them into the correct gerund form.

Before the twentieth century, hobbies were something that only the wealthy had the time or money to enjoy. The present-day enthusiasm for participate in an absorbing activity is the result of many people's bless with greater prosperity and more free time. Some popular hobbies are as old as civilization. Play music, paint, and sculpt have always fascinated many. Collect valuable objects, rare manuscripts, and art treasures were the hobbies of rulers in ancient times. At the end of the nineteenth century, a strong interest in arts and crafts developed, and people expressed themselves in weave, pottery make, wood carve, and other artistic activities. Today, many individuals enjoy use computers or make their own movies with video cassettes.

Many sports and games are also popular hobbies. Sports such as tennis and sail provide activity and competition; so does play such games as chess and bridge. Recognize as an expert in one of these areas can give one a feeling of satisfaction. Hobbies have long provided a means for people's express themselves and find enjoyment.
