Kemerovo Region

Part I

Kemerovo region is situated in the centre of Russian Federation. It occupies the south-eastern part of Western Siberia. The total area of Kemerovo region is 95 700 square kilometres. In terms of size Kemerovo region is bigger than Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland. In the north the region borders on Tomsk region, in the south and south-west - on the Altai territory, in the west - on Novosibirsk region and in the east - on Krasnoyarsk Krai. The time difference between Kemerovo region and Moscow is 4 hours. The time difference between Kemerovo region and London (Greenwich Mean Time = GMT) is 7 hours in winter and 8 hours in summer.

Almost half of the area is covered with mountains. The most important mountain ranges the Kuznetski Alatau and Gornaya Shoria are situated in the east and south of the region. In the west lies the West-Siberian Lowlands.

The climate of Kemerovo region is continental with cold and long winters and short but warm summers. The coldest month is January, the mean temperature in January is from -17°C to -20°C Centigrade. The hottest month is July, the mean temperature in July is from +19°C to +25°C Centigrade. The weather is changeable.

On the territory of Kemerovo region 1 600 big and small rivers are registered. All of them belong to the river Ob basin. The main waterway is the Tom river, flowing from the south-east to the north-west of the region. The longest rivers of the region are the Kiya, the Inya, the Chulym, the Chumysh. The largest lake of our region Bolshoi Berchikul is situated in the north-east. It is supplied practically only by underground waters.

The nature of our region is beautiful. There are many forests, especially of pine, birch and fir. One can often meet many wild animals, such as the fox, brown bear, wolf, hare, lynx, beaver in the forest and forest-steppe. Tourists spend much time exploring the splendid nature of our region.

Kemerovo region is very rich in mineral resources. The most important of them are coal, iron ore, manganese, aluminium, precious metals and non-ferrous metals. Coal was discovered by Mikhailo Volkov in the 1720s. Since that time many mines, plants and factories have been built in the region. Kemerovo region is an important industrial centre now. The main branches of in­dustry are coal mining, ferrous metal industry, non-ferrous metal industry, machine building, chemical industry, woodworking industry and food industry. The industry of the Kuzbass produces all kinds of metal products from spoons, forks and knives to machines and rails. The economic centres of our region are Novokuznetsk, Prokopyevsk, Mezhdurechensk, Kiselyovsk, Leninsk Kuznetski and others.

The agriculture of Kemerovo region produces meat, milk, vegetables, fruit and many other kinds of agricultural products.

The Kuzbass is the most densely populated region of western Siberia. Its population is 2 962 000 people. More than 87 % of the region population is concentrated in cities and settlements of town type. There are 20 towns and cities in Kemerovo region. The Kuzbass is a multi-ethnic region. The administrative centre of Kemerovo region is Kemerovo.
