Урок 11

3.1

Аt the book shop

N Hey, Orrie! Are you looking for something special?

O Netty! I’m just browsing, but usually I find something which I can’t but buy. And you?

N I’m picking up some painting albums. I can’t get enough of them.

O Ah. You are an art lover, aren’t you?

N Right. It’s really a pleasure to curl up with an album or a book on arts. I relax to the full.

O Oh, yes. And I love reading memoirs. I quit all the trash I had read before for memoirs.

N Why memoirs? I guess it must be boring.

O You are wrong. You just try and you will learn so many unknown facts about famous

people.

N Maybe. I think I’ll get something of the kind.

O Don’t bother. If you like I’ll give it to you.

3.2

In a coffee house

I Good day, Mrs. Morgan. Can I take a seat at your table?

M Oh, Ivy, glad to see you. You are welcome.

I Mrs. Morgan, yesterday I saw you with a group of people and a guide walking in

the city centre. Was it a guided tour?

M Yes. You see, Ivy, I’m tired of staying at home and feeling lonely. I decided to

join the club of local history. I’ve been living here for more than twenty five years,

but I still don’t know it well. Now it’s a hobby for pleasure.

I How often do you have your guided tours?

M Twice a week. Our guide is really a “walking encyclopedia”. Besides, it’s a

perfect chance to socialize with interesting people and make friends.

I I’m glad to hear it, Mrs. Morgan.

3.3

A phone talk

R Hi, Olga. It’s Rae speaking. I’m calling to say that I was impressed with your singing

and the jazz band yesterday. It was such a pleasure.
O Thank you, Rae. It was the fifth anniversary of our band yesterday.

R Great. It’s a perfect example of that how a hobby becomes a profession.
O Yeah, now jazz is the love of my life. Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Glen

Miller are my idols. I try to get all their records and listen to them every free minute.

R As far as I know you take part almost in all cultural events of the town.
O Right, but not only. We travel a lot with our concerts.

R I’ll be glad to listen to you again.
O Sure. I will let you know about the concert.

4.1

A Do you like collecting things?

B I think it costs a pretty penny. But, frankly speaking, I’ve never tried it. I’d rather surf the

Internet.

A If you ask me, I find it to be mere waste of time. Collecting is an absorbing hobby. I collect

rare records of the 1950s and 1960s.

B It doesn’t turn me on. The virtual world is more realistic than our life. People socialize,

make friends, play and learn here.

A And what about keeping fit, going to the theatres, reading books?

B I find everything I want on the Internet.

A Well, tastes differ.

4.2

A I haven’t seen you for long. Where have you been?

B I’ve been to Rostov. I took part in archeological excavations.

A Lucky you are. It must be very exiting. Was it your first expedition?

B Yes. I got interested in the history of old Russian towns long ago. I picked up special

literature, attended courses.

A Great.

B Next summer we are going to Murom. If you like, you can join us.

4.3

A Did you see the match yesterday?

B Oh, yes. It was a complete failure for our team. But as for me I prefer doing sports

rather than watching a competition or a match on TV.

A I’m not with you here. I hate exhausting trainings. Swimming was my life until I was

eleven. My father wanted me to do well. I had trainings twice a day. It was a nightmare.

B I see. And what about passive sports such as chess or draughts?

A I don’t have the brains for strategic thinking in chess. In addition, besides sports I like

watching reality shows.

B You seem to spend all the time on the sofa.

A Why not? My friends call me a couch potato.

6.1

A Hi, how are you?

B Fine. Going to Finland in three days.

A On a business trip?

B No, I’ve got the invitation from my friend Saati to visit her.

A You’ve got a friend in Finland? As far as I know, you’ve never been to Finland, have you?

B No, but a year ago I found the site, where one can find pen-friends. Since then cultivating

pen-friends has become my hobby.

A Great. How many countries are there in your list?

B Not so many yet. That’s enough for me. All my friends speak English. So my hobby is not

only for pleasure. I improve my English as well as learn a lot about culture and traditions of

these countries.

6.2

A Hi. Yesterday I read your article about extraordinary hobbies of people, living in our area.

I couldn’t put it down.

B Thank you. First, writing articles for the local newspaper is my hobby too, because I’m not

a professional journalist. Second, there are a lot of interesting people living in our town,

who have exciting hobbies.

A For example, Mr. and Mrs. Wrigly, who at their 70s go clubbing and dance even better

than some young people.

B Oh, yes. I just fell in love with them. Oh Mr. Donovan who has a terrific collection of

stones from all over the world. He has been traveling all his life.

6.3

Аt the tourist information bureau

A Good afternoon. You know, I’ve just moved here from Dublin. Could you give me some

information about clubs and leisure activities in the area?

B Welcome to our town! I hope you’ll like it here. Do you have any special interests?

A Actually, I do. I like to sing and play board games. But in summer, I prefer being outdoors.

B Well, there are two choirs in town. The one performs classics, the other prefers folk music.

A Fine. I’ve got a choice.

B Sure, And every first Sunday of the month, the local pub has its “play day” for board games

and bingo.

A And what about outdoor activities?

B That might be guided tours of the local history museum or guided nature walks.

A Thank you very much for help.
