State University of New York

The State University of New York or SUNY [‘su: ni: ] is a system of public institutions of higher education in New York. It is the largest comprehensive university system in the United States. It comprises 64 institutions, including research universities, academic medical centers, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, colleges of technology and an online learning network in New York State and across the globe. SUNY includes four University Centers: Albany (1844), Buffalo (1846), Binghamton (1946), and Stony Brook (1957). SUNY’s administrative offices are in Albany, the state’s capital.

These institutions educate about 463, 000 students in more than 7, 500 degree and certificate programs. There are also nearly 2 million adult education students. SUNY offers students various educational options including short-term vocational / technical courses, certificate, associate, and baccalaureate degree programs, graduate degrees and post-doctoral studies.

The State University of New York or SUNY was officially established in February 1948 when New York became the 48th state to create a state university system. SUNY initially represented a consolidation of 29 unaffiliated institutions, including 11 teachers’ colleges. All of these colleges united for a common goal: to serve New York State. Since 1948 SUNY has grown to include 64 individual colleges and universities that were either formerly independent institutions or directly founded by the State University of New York.‌

SUNY is governed by a Board of Trustees, which consists of eighteen members, fifteen of whom are appointed by the Governor. The sixteenth member is the President of the SUNY Student Assembly. The last two members are the Presidents of the University Faculty Senate and Faculty Council of Community Colleges, both of whom are non-voting. The Board of Trustees appoints the Chancellor who serves as SUNY Chief Executive Officer.
