1. Look at the following sentences. What is the difference between them?

a. They produced this TV in Japan.

b. This TV is produced in Japan

a. They make films in Hollywood.

b. Films are made in Hollywood.

 

Passive Voice. Revise the rules

Use Example Notes/problems
Use the passive when the focus of a sentence is on the thing/person that is the object of an action instead of on the person/thing that does the action.   If the person who did the action is also important, use by The film was made in 1990 Rice is grown in China   The new buildings were opened by the Prime minister (we are interested in the film, not in the director) The passive is often used in English where other languages use an impersonal verb   The passive is more common in written than in spoken English

 

Forms of Passive Voice
Indefinite tenses: be + participle II be Present: am, is, are. ex. I am told. He is told. We are told Past: was, were ex. I was told. He was told. We were told. Future: will be ex. I will be told. He will be told. We will be told.
Continuous tenses: be + being + participle II ex. I am being told The houses were being built at that time last year.

Read the sentences and underline all examples of the passive.

a “Great Expectations” was written by Charles Dickens. He also wrote David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and many other popular books,

b Shampoo is tested on animals before it is sold in shops. This is because it might be dangerous for humans.

с The rainforests are disappearing, so most newspapers are printed on recycled paper,

d A new sports stadium is being built in London.

e Toyota cars are made in Japan. They are more environmentally friendly than o other cars.

f The city of Atlantis has never been found, but many people are still looking for it.

g “Star Wars” was directed by George Lucas. It is one of the most popular films ever made.

h Football was invented in England and is now played all over the world.

i The Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century but nobody is sure who designed it.

j Chinese New Year is celebrated in January or February, depending on the moon.

Underline the most suitable verb form in each sentence.
