Text I: System of education

Higher education takes an important part in the life of any country. There are about 3000 institutions of higher education in Russia and more than 200 in Moscow. Usually the structure of each university is traditional. The head of the university is a rector. There are several faculties at the university. Each faculty is headed by a dean and has a number of specialized departments. The course of studies lasts 4-6 years. The academic year in the higher school begins on the 1st of September and is divided into two terms (autumn and spring semesters). The students take credits and exams at the end of each term. If the results of the examinations are good, they get grants or scholarship. The universities can offer different systems of study to their students. It can be a full-time (resident) learning, special evening education, or external learning (by correspondence).

At present a new system of education is introduced at the university – a distance education system. This computer system of learning helps working professionals to continue their education staying at their jobs. This system enables people to get basic sciences’ knowledge in a certain field of study. Distance learning has developed over years from satellite video courses to modern videoconferencing through personal computers.

The oldest, largest, and the most prestigious university in Russia is Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov. It was founded in 1755 by the linguist M. V. Lomonosov and was modeled after German system of education. In the second half of the 19th century, Moscow State University became the most important centre of scientific researches in Russia. It has more than 350 laboratories, a number of research institutes, several observatories, and also several museums.

The economic development of each country depends on the level of education which its citizens have. There is always a great need in highly-qualified specialists for future prospects and progress. Nowadays the styles of teaching, the quality of learning materials and organization of the institution have to be brought up to date and improved. We should remember that education is a process through which culture is preserved, knowledge and skills are developed, values are formed, and information is exchanged. Education is the way to success.

Text II: Moscow State University of Printing Arts named after Ivan Fedorov

Moscow State University of Printing Arts named after Ivan Fedorov is the only higher education school in Russia, which prepares the personnel for publishing and printing business, graphic arts and distribution of the printing products.

The history of the university goes back to July, 1930 when the Higher Arts and Technical studies, called the Higher Art and Technical Institute (VHUTEIN) was founded. And soon, 40 engineers-technologists were the first graduates of the university.

In January, 1997 it became Moscow State University of Printing Arts (MSUPA).

In 2010 Moscow State University of Printing Arts celebrated the 80th anniversary of its establishing and in honour of that event it was named after the first Russian printer Ivan Fedorov.

During the years of work, the university has achieved the reputation of the main centre of professional training, and it has also become the keeper of Russian traditions in graphic arts and publishing. In the period of its existence, more than 60 thousands experts for the printing industry have graduated the university. The annual admition of the budget forms students is about 900. Moreover, for all comers it is possible to become a self paying student.

There are six faculties and more than 40 departments which appeared in the structure of the university.

The Faculty of Graphic Arts Design. This artistic school of illustrators continues the traditions of “Vhutemas”, that was founded in 1920-s. The faculty prepares high-qualified artists, who work in artistic design, illustration and drawing of the printing product. The following departments are included in the structure of the faculty: the department of Graphic Design and Animation, the department of Drawing and Painting, the department of Illustration and Print, the department of Artistic and Technical Equipment of the Printing Product, the department of Philosophy. There are many artistic workshops, which are conducted by well-known experts of this business. The teachers, the graduates and the students of the faculty take part in many Russian and international artistic and book business events.

The faculty of print media technologies. This technical school is one of the fundamental parts of the university. The faculty trains bachelors in technology of printing industry, design in packaging, quality management, science of materials, printing machines and automated complexes. The area of professional education is covered by special training course in conventional and digital prepress, text and image editing, platemaking and technological design. Several masters and postgraduates courses are also available at this faculty.

The faculty of information technologies and media systems can give an excellent basis to the graduates in the sphere of web-programming and web-design, electronic equipment engineering, image and sound editing, e-publishing and e-distribution, data bases, networks and other computer controlled systems.

The faculty of economics and management trains bachelors and masters in economics, management, and marketing of an enterprise in printing industry, accounting analysis and audit. The combination of university’s traditions and innovation approaches to the process of study can help the graduates of this faculty to become successful and competitive professionals in publishing, banking, insurance and investment business.

The Faculty of Book Business and Journalism. The graduates of this faculty complete the core of national publishing and book business. This faculty prepares the bachelors in the sphere of publishing and editing, book distribution, book business. In 2006 a new specialization “Journalism” appeared at this faculty with the opening of the Periodical Press department. Such departments as “Book Business”, “Publishing and Editing”, “Russian Language and Stylistics”, “Bibliology and Book Promotion”, “Literature”, “Intercultural Communications and Translation” possess the teaching staff among the leaders and contributors of the largest publishing agencies in Russia.

The faculty of advertising and public relations trains the professionals, who are in great demand on the modern labour-market. This faculty is one of the most popular schools in the business of marketing communications, that’s why each year thousands of applicants try to become those few who study here. Copywriting, design, creating and art-directing, advertising, account management, brand management, PR and event- management are the courses that create high qualified professionals, who make the image and reputation of the business company, and become business, social and political leaders.

 

Our university together with the University of Oxford Brooks (UK) and the State University of Library Science and Information Technologies (Sofia, Bulgaria) supplies the program of double diplomas.

The university development is achieved with the help of some foreign equipment producers (Heidelberg, Mann-Roland, Kerning & Bauer, DuPont, X-Reith), who also have taken part in establishing the laboratories and practice training centers for students, equipped with modern printing machines, computers and stuff.

The university teachers and students make annual scientific investigations to the amount of 700-800 000 euro. They are oriented on the development of the publishing market problems, modern methods of the printing information output, and their usage in the society.

Several printing enterprises such as «Academic Printing House» and «Alfa –Design» cover the functions of students practice training. The university’s publishing and producing center prints more than 100 titles of issues: textbooks, training aids, methodical editions and others.

The student’s life at the university is active and bright. There are many organizations, societies, clubs of interest, dancing and sports groups for the students. Those, who are interested in publishing, can try themselves in making two university’s newspapers. The others can join students’ theatre, “KVN” command or choir. The living conditions of the students are under special control. The university has two hostels. Last year the hostels won the second place in the All –Russian competition “Our students’ house.” The best flat contest is held at the university’s hostels twice a year. All services, such as bed linens change, running water and electricity are included into a hostel fee. There is also a laundry service at the hostels. The hostels have a library with reading room and free Internet connection available for the students of the university.
