XXI. 1) Read an extract from an interview and write down all expressions

You consider relevant to the topic under study.

2) Memorize the dialogue and act it out with a partner:

Interviewer: Well, Simon. Let mе tell you а little about the job first, and then

you can tell mе about yourself, right?

Applicant: Yes, fine.

Interviewer: Good. Well, the job title is Assistant Contracts Manager. Basical-

ly, it involves visiting hotels, assessing them according to our own

rating system, and deciding if we should include them in our bro-

chure. As the advertisement said, you would be based in Bridge-

stone, but you would spend an equal amount of time abroad in

Germany and Greece, mainly, but there would be some trips to

Croatia, Montenegro and the like

Simon: Mmm. Does that mean I would work alone?

Interviewer: No. То start with you would work with the Contracts Manager –

you’ll meet her later – er, but you wouldn’t be directly involved in

negotiating with hotels at that stage. However, at the end of six

months we would assess your progress, and if we felt you were

ready, we would allow you more independence. You would still

report to the Contracts Manager, of course. Any questions so far?

Simon: No. I think that’s clear.

Interviewer: Now I see from your CV that you spent three years working as а

rep for Jackson and C^o, is that right?

Simon: Right you are. I worked in Tunisia for the first year, then the following

seasons I was transferred to Bodrum in Turkey. I got to know аll the

hotels quite well.

Interviewer: Yes. I wanted to ask you about that…

a) A conversation between a member of hotel staff and a guest:

- а member of hotel staff is interviewing the guest to find out

his opinion about his hotel’s accommodations and services

- a guest is answering the questions asked.

b) A conversation between an applicant and the interviewer:

- an applicant is eager to get a position

- the interviewer is trying to find out more about the applicant’s

qualifications and experience.
