Complex Object with the Participle

Remember! We use Complex Object with the Participle after the verbs denoting sense and perception

 

(to hear, to see to watch, to feel, to observe, etc.) After the verbs denoting wish and intention(want, wish, would like) and in the construction have smth. done

 

Exercise 16. Replace the following groups of sentences by simple sentence with Complex Object.

1. The students were writing a test. The teacher watched them. 2. My friends were dancing. I saw it. 3. I heard Alice. She was singing a modern song in English. 4. We saw our English teacher. She was crossing Bohomoltsia Street. 5. The nurse watched the children. They were running and laughing in the garden. 6. My friend was playing the piano. I heard it. 7. The students were watching the sun. It was rising.

Exercise 17. Translate into Ukrainian/Russian, paying attention to the use of the Complex Object with the Infinitive or the Participle.

1. I heard a train arriving at the railway station. 2. I heard the door of the house open and close suddenly. 3. I came up to the window and saw my husband walking in the garden. 4. I felt her heart beat with joy. 5. We stood on the hill watching the sun rising in the East. 6. It’s nice to see the students enjoying themselves. 7. I heard her telling the teacher the rules of using of the Complex Object. 8. Our English teacher watched the students listening to the cassette recorder. 9. The students were so noisy that they didn’t notice the teacher come into the classroom. 10. My friend wasn’t ready for the exam and I felt his voice trembling.

Exercise 18. Fill in the blanks with a suitable verb using the Complex Object with the Infinitive or

the Participle.

to sing, to shake, to photograph, to buy, to come up, to sail away, to see, to walk down, to stand, to climb

 

1. Did you feel the house (to shake?) 2. I heard her (to sing) an old English song in the next room. 3. We noticed a policeman (to stand) at the corner and asked the way to Khreshchatyk. 4. I saw the students (to photograph) animals at the Zoo. 5. Mike watched his grandmother (to walk down) the path in the garden. 6. The teacher saw the children (to climb) to the top of the tree. 7. I noticed Ann (to come up) to the group of students. 8. We saw the ship (to sail away) from the port. 9. Have you heard her (to sing) the part of Christine in the “Phantom of the Opera”? 10 My friends saw Jane (to buy) flowers at the market.

Exercise 19. Put the words into the right order to make up sentences using the Complex Object with the Participle 1.

Exercise 20. Translate into English, paying attention to the use of the Complex Object with the Infinitive or the Participle.

Model: 1. Я відчув, що він торкнувся моєї руки. 2. Я відчував, як він торкається моєї руки.

1. I felt him touch my hand. 2. I felt him touching my hand.

 

1. Я чув, що машина під’їхала до мого будинку. 2. Я чув, що машина під’їжджає до мого будинку. 3. Я підійшла до вікна і побачила, що діти перейшли вулицю. 4. Я підійшла до вікна і побачила, як діти переходять вулицю. 5. Я бачив, що мій друг зайшов до будинку. 6. Я бачив, як мій друг заходив до будинку. 7. Учитель помітив, що студенти розмовляли на уроці. 8. Учитель спостерігав, як студенти інсценували діалоги англійською. 9. Ми бачили, що молоді люди перепливли річку. 10. Ми бачили, що молоді люди перепливають річку.

 

To Have Something Done

 

The construction is used to say that we arrange for someone else to do something for us.

 

Have +object + past participle

 

E.g.: We had the house painted yesterday-Нам учора пофарбували дім.

Exercise 21. Translate into Ukrainian/Russian.

1. I must have my hair cut. 2. I must have my room repaired. 3. I had my books brought yesterday. 4. I have the plants watered. 4. We had dinner served. 5. She must have her photo taken. 6. How often do you have you car served? 7. Jane has just had her car cleaned. 8. John had all his money stolen. 9. Ann had her dress made. 10. We had the windows cleaned yesterday.

Exercise 22. Answer the questions using the model.

Model: Did Jane make the dress herself?

No, she had it made.

 

1. Did you make the pictures yourself?

2. Did your farther build the house himself?

3. Did your brother paint the fence himself?

4. Did they repair the car themselves?

5. Did you clean your coat yourself?

6. Did you write this poem yourself?

Exercise 23. Translate into English using the pattern “to have smth. done”.

Model: Тут вам пошиють плаття за тиждень.

Here you can have your dress made in a week.

1. Тут вам зроблять зачіску. 2. Йому потрібно сфотографуватися. 3. Моя подруга пошила собі нове плаття. 4. Йому потрібно відремонтувати машину. 5. Я чищу свій костюм кожного тижня. 6. Нам зараз роблять ремонт дома. 7. У неї вкрали сумку. 8. Їй було потрібно, щоб листи відправили негайно. 9. Мені необхідно, щоб робота була виконана на цьому тижні. 10. Коли ти пофарбуєш свою машину?

Remember!

The Objective Participle Construction with Participle II is used after the verbs:

1) to see, to hear, to feel. 2)would like, need, want. 3) get, have. 4)consider.

Exercise 24. Fill in the blanks with a suitable verb using the Objective Participle Construction with Participle II.

To touch, to publish, to check, to hang, to do, to look, to clean, to carry.

 

1. I want this article … in the newspaper. 2. My mum didn’t want her things... 3. Do you want this picture … over the fire place? 4. The student wanted her test … immediately. 5. We didn’t want our papers … through. 6. If you want the work … well, do it yourself. 7. Do you need the books … upstairs? 8. I want my room … today. 9. I have my coat cleaned every month. 10. I need this watch repaired quickly.

Exercise 25. Put the words in the correct order to make up sentences with Objective Participle Construction with participle II.

Exercise 26. Match two parts of the sentence using the Objective Participle Construction with Participle I or Participle II.

Model: We went outside and saw our friend approaching the house. (1-d)
