The following phrases are used in this construction:

Complex Subject after these verbs is used in the following way:

1. ‘ To infinitive’ is used after these verbs if theyindicate the speaker’s attitude to the future, e.g.

· It is certain to rain in the evening. = Вечером наверняка пойдет дождь. / Увечері напевно піде дощ.

· We are bound to be successful. = Нет сомнения, что у нас всё получится. / Немає сумніву, що в нас усе вийде.

2. In this function, non-perfect active or passive infinitives preferably are used, e.g.

· Mary’s boss is likely to promote her in spring. = Босс Марии, наверняка, повысит ее весной. / Бос Марії, напевно, підвищить її навесні.

· Mary is likely to be promoted in spring. = Мария наверняка получит повышение весной. / Марія напевно одержить підвищення навесні.

3. In Modern English, perfect forms of infinitive are used to show a completed action, e.g.

• My friends are unlikely to have received my letter yet. = Мои друзья вряд ли уже получили мое письмо. / Мої друзі навряд чи вже одержали мій лист.
• Teresa is certain to have failed her exam. = Тереза наверняка провалила свой экзамен. / Тереза напевно провалила свій іспит.

4. Sentences with this construction are translated into Russian or Ukrainian with the help of modal words ‘ вероятно, конечно же, наверняка, вряд ли, скорее всего, определенно’/ ‘ імовірно, звичайно ж, напевно, навряд чи, швидше за все, скоріше за все, безперечно,, e.g.

· Freda informed us that she was likely to be late. = Фрида сообщила нам, что она, скорей всего, опоздает. / Фріда повідомила нам, що вона, скоріше за все, спізниться.

· My friend is sure to come in time. = Мой друг, наверняка, придет вовремя. / Мій друг, напевно, прийде вчасно.

· The weather is not likely to change. = Погода вряд ли изменится. / Погода навряд чи зміниться.

· The criminal is unlikely to be caught in the nearest future. – Этого преступника вряд ли поймают в ближайшем будущем. / Цього злочинця навряд чи піймають у найближчому майбутньому.

· This book is certain to be found sooner or later. – Эта книга, наверняка, найдется рано или поздно. / Ця книга, напевно, знайдеться рано або пізно.

· The money is certain to last them till the end of the week. = Им, определенно, хватит денег до конца недели. / Їм, безперечно, вистачить грошей до кінця тижня.

· Don't lie to her. She's bound to find out. = Не лги ей. Она наверняка об этом догадается. / Не бреши їй. Вона, напевно, про це здогадається.

TASK 52. Translate the sentences below into Russian/Ukrainian and define the form of the infinitive.

1. Nothing appeared to be happening in the town.

2. Little John proved to be a healthy child.

3. The night turned out to be extremely cold.

5. The boy seemed to have been running all the way.

9. Moira seemed to have been given all the instructions before the beginning of the contest.
