ROUTE No. 1

1. St. Volodymyr Cathedral is one of the most beautiful temples in Kyiv.

It was built in the 19^th century by architects Strom, Sparro and Beretti.

It was designed in a Byzantine style and dedicated to Prince Volodymyr who baptized Kyivan Rus.

The Cathedral is famous for its frescos and mosaics made by outstanding Russian artists Vasnetsov, Vrubel and Nesterov.

Now it attracts visitors from all around the world.

2. The National Opera House is a very beautiful building.

It was established in 1867 and saw Shaliapin, Tchaikovsky, Lysenko, Rakhmaninov.

In 1896 it burnt down, and a new building was designed in the Neo-Renaissance style.

Now the House stages world renowned operas and ballets.

3. The Golden Gate is one of the most important ancient structures of Kyivan Rus.

It dates back to the 11^th century and used to be the main entrance to the city.

It was founded by Prince Yaroslav the Wise to protect the city from foreign invaders.

Over centuries it fell into decay and was brought to life in the 19^th century.

Now it offers a museum exhibiting items related to the history of old Kyiv.

4. St. Sophia Cathedral is the world famous historic and architectural monument.

It was built in the 11^th century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

The legend says before a battle with the Pechenegs the Prince prayed and promised to build a church if he defeated the enemy.

It used to be an important social, political and cultural centre of Kyivan Rus.

In medieval times it was badly damaged, and carefully restored in a baroque style in the 18^th century.

The cathedral displays beautiful mosaics and frescos.

5. Andriyivsky Uzviz (St Andrew’s Descent) is one of the oldest streets in Kyiv and is a must-see for anyone who comes to visit the capital.

It used to link the Podil and the Upper Town.

Here you can find St Andrew Church.

The legend says it was founded by Saint Andrew who placed his cross on the site.

The Church was built in the 18^th century by architect Rastrelli.

Now the street offers gift shops, cafes, picture galleries, a museum and a theatre.

6. St Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral is one of the oldest monasteries in Kyiv.

The legend says it was built by Prince Sviatopolk in 1108 after his victory over the Polovtsians.

It was destroyed by the Soviet regime in the 1930s.

Following Ukraine's independence in 1991, St Michael's was rebuilt and reconstructed.

Here, you will find a summer house with a spring. Your wish is believed to come true if your coin stays fixed to one of the horns.

7. Khreschatyk is Kyiv’s main thoroughfare flanked by chestnut trees (the city’s symbol).

It used to be a valley and a river surrounded by a forest where Kyiv princes used to go hunting.

During World War II the street was badly damaged and then reconstructed.

Now it attracts millions of tourists who can have a walk, visit fancy restaurants and boutiques as well as admire fine architecture.

At weekends it is a pedestrian precinct where you can watch concerts and live performances.
