EXERCISE 3

Read and translate the following facts about the English language:

1. English is the most widespread language in the world and is more widely spoken and written than any other language. A higher number of people speak Mandarin Chinese, but English covers a greater area.

2. Over 400 million people use English as a mother tongue.

3. Over 700 million people speak English as a foreign language.

4. One out of four of the world's population speaks English to some level of competence.

5. The most widely spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. There are 885, 000, 000 people in China that speak that language.

6. English has official or special status in at least seventy five countries with a total population of over two billion.

7. Of all the languages in the world, English has the largest vocabulary about 800, 000 words.

8. No language has more synonyms than English.

9. The most common letter in English is " E" and the letter " Q" is the least used.

10. More English words begin with the letter " S" than with any other letter.

EXERCISE 4

Students divide into 3 mini groups. Every mini group reads a separate text. Students discuss their text inside their mini groups. Then, they form new groups and speak about their texts to other students in the new groups.
