Travelling by train

Personally I hate seeing people off and I don't like being seen off myself either. Frankly speaking there is an embarrassing situation when friends and relatives come to see you off and the train leaves in a few minutes and you don't manage to tell them everything you want. You are sitting in the carriage ready to depart, only a few minutes are left... You have to repeat your questions but they can't hear you and don't understand you - all you see is that they are shaking their heads. Really a very embarrassing situation! In fact you've got to be prepared to face a lot of difficulties. You see I've got a friend of mine. He is extremely fond of travelling and for him there is nothing like travelling by train. From the comfortable corner seat of a carriage you have a splendid view of the whole countryside.

But I know it from my own experience that hardly everyone can enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. Train compartment soon gets cramped and stuffy. During the day sleep comes in snatches. But at night when you really wish to go to sleep... Alas!... you hardly manage to do so. Inevitably you arrive at your destination almost exhausted.

Once my friend asked me: " Do you know any other place that is more interesting than a big railway station? There is the movement, the excitement, the gaiety of people going away or waiting to meet friends! There are the shouts of the porters as they pull luggage along the platform to the waiting trains! "

Well, that seems doubtful to me. Just imagine you've got a lot of bags, suitcases, rucksacks - pretty heavy luggage - you hire a porter and he takes all your luggage and just disappears. And you have forgotten his personal number and don't even remember what he looks like. You are in despair - only five minutes are left till your train departs but the porter is still missing!... The result is that you're fussing back and forth and when at last your luggage is found you don't have any time and wish to appreciate the advantages of the railway station. As for me, hustle and bustle of big railway stations is always getting on my nerves.

It goes without saying that after such a journey you'll arrive at your destination absolutely worn out and you'll have to spend the next few days to get over a long and tiresome journey.
