1. Match the menu items with the menu section they belong to.

1. Fill in the articles or some/any where necessary. Pay attention to the use of articles with the names of food:

Note: Names of food are names of materials. They have no article when they are used in a general sense as uncountables. In this case they have either no attribute or have a descriptive attribute (Bread is made from flour. I don’t eat red meat).

When the indefinite amount of some food is meant the pronouns some/any is used. The indefinite article is not used in this meaning (I’d like some juice. Have we got any cheese?). The pronouns some/any can also be used with countable plural nouns in the meaning ‘several’ (Add some berries to the ice-cream).

The definite article is used with names of materials when they are narrowed in their meaning. (The bread is stale. Add some more pepper to the sauce. I have tasted some wine and I can say the red wine is better).

4. Translate from Russian into English. This is an extract from the book The Three Fat Men by Yu. Olesha:

Это было окно кондитерской. Здесь, несмотря на поздний час, кипела работа. Весь штат кондитеров и хитрых мальчишек в белых колпаках суетились вовсю: они готовили какой-то особенный компот к завтрашнему обеду.

Посреди стоял чан. В нем кипятилась вода. Белый пар заволок всё. Под этим покровом поварята блаженствовали: они нарезали для компота фрукты.

(…) Внезапно ворвались оружейники. Это был разгром сверкающего стеклянного, медного, горячего, сладкого, душистого мира кондитерской. Они опрокидывали банки, разбрасывали сковороды, воронки, тарелки, блюда. Стекло разлеталось во все стороны и билось со звоном и громом; рассыпанная мука вертелась столбом; поднялся вихрь миндаля, изюма, черешен, сахарный песок хлестал с полок с грохотом водопада; наводнение сиропов поднялось на целый аршин; брызгала вода, катились фрукты, рушились медные башни кастрюль. Всё стало кверху дном.
