Ex.1. Analyze forming of the Complex Subject the sentences.

1. They happened to be dining at the Pattersons’ that day. 2. The playwriter doesn’t seem to have written anything new. 3. She appeared to be enjoying our company. 4. The boy felt somebody put the hand into his pocket. 5. He was unlikely to take any effort to improve the situation. 6. Wolves were aid to be hidden away in the deepest forests. 7. The Zookeepers are expected to take care of the animals. 8. The film is thought to be the first demonstration. 9. Most British people seem to want to make a difference between consuming other people’s imaginative ideas and creating one’s own.

 

Ex.2. Change the following sentences according to the example.

E.g.: It seems that marine animals are useful in medicine.

Marine animals seem to be useful in medicine.

 

1. It is known that dactylene is promising for the treatment of nervous disorders.

2. It was found that dactylene increased the period of sleeping in rats and mice after they had been given a barbiturate.

3. It is expected that the new chemical compounds will be important is the treatment of tumour growths.

 

Ex.3. Change the following sentences according to the example.

E.g.: It is said he is studying the effects of dactylene on mice.

He is said to be studying the effects of dactylene on mice.

1. It is expected that the expedition is leaving tomorrow.

2. It was thought that he was approaching the end of his research.

3. It is known that the experiment has been going on for some weeks.

Ex.4. Translate the sentences from Russian into English using the Complex Subject.

1. Видно было, как машина скрылась вдали. 2. Он обязательно придет, но маловероятно, что привезет с собой сына. 3. Кажется, они совсем забыли о наставлении психолога. 4. По-видимому, его одаренность наследственна. 5. В газетах сообщалось, что в ближайшее время открывается художественная школа для талантливых детей. 6. Считают, что она получила творческий дар от Бога. 7. Было объявлено, что собрание не состоится. 8. Вероятно, она не знает еще своего диагноза. 9. Так случилось, что он потерял зрение и слух в результате контузии, но приобрел дар предвидения. 10. Казалось, его глаза повсюду следят за ней.

The gods had given Irene dark-brown eyes and golden hair, which is said to be the mark of a weak character. (Jh. Galsworthy)

 

Ex.6. Translate the sentences.

1. The question rightly addressed, the answer would doubtlessly supply a clear account which would satisfy the scientist. 2. Why, then should that truth be hidden from the parents? 3. Even, if it be admitted that a talent may refer to concrete things, it will at least be said that a talent always refers to them in a certain aspect. 4. It was suggested that the gifted people be gifted from their birth.

Ex.7. Identify which of the English and Russian sentences rendes the meaning of the sentence with the Complex Subject:
