Ex. 1. Ask and answer the following questions.

1. How often do you go shopping?

2. When do you usually do shopping?

3. When did you last go shopping?

4. Do you like cooking?

5. How often do you go to cafes, restaurants?

6. Which is your favourite dessert?

7. What do you usually have for breakfast, lunch, dinner?

8. When did you last go on a diet?

9. Do you taste national cuisines while travelling?

10. Do you eat to live or do you live to eat?

 

Ex. 2. Act out the following dialogues. Don’t forget about intonation. Substitute the words in bold.

I. A: You know, I’ m going shopping this weekend.

B: Are you? I went shopping last weekend.

A: Did you? So did I! What did you buy?

B: I bought everything I had planned. I bought a very fashionable dress, another pair of sunglasses, a hat, and a pair of shoes that match my new dress. What are you going to buy?

A: There is still a sale, and I like buying things cheaper. So I’ m going to buy a new bag to match my cardigan.

B: Are you? So am I./ I’m not. I’m going to buy…

 

II. A: What are we having for breakfast?

B: Some porridge and fruit.

A: Oh, I don’t want any porridge. I don’t like it.

B: But it is very tasty and healthy.

A: I’d rather have something more appetizing.

B: Then take some cornflakes and milk.

A: That’s just what I want.

 

III. A: Hi, Mary. What are you doing?

B: I’m making a shopping list, Peter.

A: What do we need?

B: Oh, we need a lot of things this week!

A: Yes, I see our fridge is empty. I can go shopping if you want.

B: Thank you, Peter! You must go to the grocer’s. We haven’t got much tea and coffee.

A: What about vegetables?

B: Yes, you must go to the greengrocer’s, too. We haven’t got any potatoes left.

A: Okay, What else are you going to buy?

B: You should also go to the butcher’s. We need some meat. We haven’t got any meat at all.

A: Have we got any beer or wine left?

B: No, we haven’t. And I’m not going to buy any.

A: Okay, okay.

IV. A: Hello, madam. Can I help you?

B: Yes. Have you got any shoes like these?

A: What size do you need?

B: Size seven.

A: And what colour?

B: Black.

A: I’m sorry, we haven’t. We’ve got one pair of size seven, but they are yellow. And they are out of fashion this year.

B: And what shoes are in fashion this year?

A: These shoes are in fashion now.

B: But… they look very uncomfortable!

A: They are really uncomfortable, but women always wear uncomfortable shoes.

B: Oh!...

 

V. A: Could you help me?

B: Yes, madam? What can I do for you?

A: Please, I’d like a summer dress, not too expensive.

B: Oh, I can offer you a wide choice of dresses to all tastes.

 

Ex. 3. Where can you buy these items? Choose from the variants in the box.

Ex. 4. What is meant in these sentences?

Ex. 5. Can you find a “general” word to describe each group of items?

Model: fruit e.g. apples, oranges, peaches

Ex. 6. Work in pairs. Go to different departments in a shop. Write similar dialogues.

 

Ex. 7. Write a dialogue according to the model.

Model: Ann: Mary, did you buy everything you had planned?

Mary: Well, I had planned to buy… but I bought only…. I didn’t buy …. I’ m going to buy… next weekend.

Ann: So, you had planned to buy… but you bought only…. You didn’t buy …. You are going to buy… next weekend.
