Meals in Britain

The names of meals in Great Britain are: breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. Breakfast in the morning may be cornflakes, taken with milk and sugar, bacon or ham with or without eggs, or some kind of fish. Toast of bread and butter with marmalade and a cup of tea or cofee is also a popular breakfast.

Some people just have toast, butter and cheese with tea or cofee for breakfast. English people usually drink tea with milk and this tea is called " English tea".

In the middle of the day people have different meals. It depends on their jobs and wages. It also depends on what part of the country they live in. People in the north have different tastes from those in the South. Their main cooked meal, whether it's at midday or in the evening, is called dinner. Those who have their dinner in the middle of the day have supper in the evening. Those who have dinner in the evening, have lunch in the middle of the day.For dinner there's always a main dish, consisting usually of meat or fish with potatoes and cooked vegetables.

Lunch or supper is a lighter meal. Many families living in the north eat something like bread and butter with perhaps fried eggs or fried fish and tea in the evening.

Shopping is a part of our daily life. When we want to buy something, we go to a shop.
There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men’s and women’s clothing stores, grocery, a bakery and a butchery.
I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: readymade clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, linen, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there.

Sugar, tea, coffee, salt, pepper, ham, bacon, and so on are sold at the grocer’s. Bread is sold at the baker’s, meat at the butcher’s. We go to the greengrocer’s for vegetables and fruit. We buy boots and shoes at the shoe shop. We buy books at the bookseller’s and jewellery and watches at the jeweller’s.
The salesman or salesgirl stands behind the counter. We ask the salesman: “How much is this? ” or “What is the price of that? ” He tells us the price. He gives us the bill. Часть 3

We go shopping every day. The other day my mother took me on a usual shopping round. We went to the grocer’s and greengrocer’s as we had run out of sugar and onions.
At the greengrocer’s there was a long queue. But we had nothing to do but stand in the queue if we wanted to get to the counter and have some onions. The shop-girl weighed us half a kilo of onions, we thanked her and went out.
Then we made our way to the grocer’s where we bought a kilo of sugar and some sausage. We were about to go home as my mother suddenly remembered we had hardly any bread in the house.
We dropped in at the baker’s and bought a loaf of brown bread, some rolls and buns. On our way home the mother decided to call at a commercial shop. She was looking for a present to my father — as it was his birthday soon.
As soon as we entered the shop, we found ourselves in a fantastic motley city of silk skirts and shirts, woolen pullovers, frocks and leather boots and shoes. The smiling girl met us at the counter.
My mother said she wanted to buy a size 50 shirt of a dark-blue color. The girl suggested looking at a dark-blue cotton shirt with short sleeves. The shirt was the latest fashion and we were sure the father would like it.

People usually go to the shop two or three times a week to buy food. Less frequently people go shopping to buy clothes, usually it is women and teenagers.
And everywhere you go, you’ll find adverts. There are many varieties of adverts: on TV, on radio, in magazines, on streets and so on.
You can see your favorite sportsman or actor advertising cars, drinks, sports shops. Superstars make big money from advertising. For example, some football and basketball players make millions of dollars from advertising sport clothes or drinks.
What are the functions of advertisements? The first function is to inform. A big part of the information people have about houses, cars, building materials, electronic equipment, cosmetics, drinks and food comes from the advertisements they read. Advertisements introduce them to new products or remind them of the existing ones.
The second function is to sell. The products are shown from the best point of view and the potential buyer, on having entered the store, unconsciously chooses the advertised products. One buys this washing powder or this chewing gum because the colorful TV commercials convince him of the best qualities of the product. Even cigarettes or alcohol are associated with the good values of human life such as joy, freedom, love and happiness, and just those associations make a person choose the advertised products.
All those small ads in the press such as “employment”, “education” and “for sale and wanted” columns, help ordinary people to find a better job or a better employee, to sell or to buy their second-hand things and to find services, or to learn about educational facilities, social events such as concerts, theatre plays, football matches, and to announce births, marriages and deaths.

frequently – часто

Часть 6

First shopping is necessity thing in our lives, because we need things like food, clothes, shoes, and so on. Like every girl I enjoy my time shopping because I like to renew my wardrobe and update my style. I prefer to walk around shops, relax, and concentrate on my shopping. However, shopping would get to dull if it became my daily routine. I feel nervous when I can’t find what I want. Sometimes shopping can be time when you feel relaxed, and sometimes you can feel angry.
Secondly I have to talk about looking after money. Sometimes I spend my money later, but now I am trying spending the money on time. I want to have money all the time, and I buy something, when I have a lot of money. Of course my parents allow me to spend money on what I want. For example the money I can spend for apparels, for cosmetics or party. Hence, my parents give me the freedom to use the money, to understand that if I spend all the money today, tomorrow I cannot buy anything.
Nonetheless everyone wants to be richer and happier. My family probably would be happier if we would be very wealthy. But money is not important and now we are living well.
Примечания:
to renew – обновлять
wardrobe – гардероб
dull – скучный
apparel – одежда
hence – следовательно
nonetheless – тем не менее
