Warm Up: Read the following description. Who do you think it describes:

a young man at a disco, an office clerk, a person in a traditional national clothing? Do you think he is Asian, American, African, European?

A white collared shirt. A black blazer. A black tie. A small black hat. A plaid [æ ] (ткань шотландка) red and green colored skirt. Long white socks. Black sandals. He has red hair. He should be holding a bagpipes (волынка).

Do you know who a Scotsman is? How does a common Scotsman look like?

Task 1 Find out facts about Scotland by matching the parts of the sentences.

Scotland are a beautiful country with green mountains, valleys and many lakes and rivers. It has a wet climate and the weather changes quickly. Scotland is about half the size of England.

Scotland is divided into three parts: the Highlands, the Lowlands and the Southern Uplands. The Highlands are among the oldest mountains in the world. There are a lot of valleys and lakes in this region, the best known lake is Loch Ness.

Most of the population of Scotland is concentrated in the Lowlands. The biggest city is Glasgow. It is an industrial city and an important port in the United Kingdom. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. It is the cultural center of the country.

There are many people nice in Scotland, but don’t try to fight with them. They are famous for their fighting and many empires like the Roman Empire are unable to defeat them. The movie ‘Brave heart’ are a good example of Scottish pride.

Gaelic was the first language in Scotland many years ago, so now it not is easy for foreigners to understand the Scottish accent. Many people in Scotland don’t want to lose the Gaelic language and culture. They are angry that they are part of Great Britain. They wants their independence.

Scotland have some difficult times in the past, but now things are getting better. Cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow are popular with tourists, while business and industry are a success. Shipbuilding is the leading industry. But other industries such as iron and steel, engineering and coal-mining are highly developed too.

Task 3 Read the text with the corrections made and to answer the questions.

1. Why do you think it was difficult for different empires to defeat Scotland?

2. Why don’t Scottish people want to be a part of Great Britain?

Task 4 Revise the rule Degrees of comparison and to complete the sentences
