Vinnytsia






Vinnytsia is a city located on the banks of the Southern Bug, in central Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Vinnytsia Oblast. Vinnytsia is located about 260 km from the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, 429 km from the port city Odesa, and 369 km from Lviv. The city rests in the historic region of Podillia. The current population is 370, 100.

Vinnytsia has been an important trade and political center since the fourteenth century, when Fedir Koriatowicz, the nephew of the Lithuanian Duke Olgerd, built a fortress (1363) against Tatar raiders on the banks of the Southern Bug. The settlement gradually developed from a farming village into a manufacturing and trading center.

There are 76 big and medium sized industrial enterprises which produce a wide range of industrial products.

Governmental scientific and industrial association “Fort” successfully produces firearms and small arms.

Public corporation “Maiak” produces domestic heating equipment.

Public corporation “Vinnytsia plant Budmash” is a multi-product corporation. It produces metal forms for ferroconcrete constructions and nonstandard equipment, reequips and repairs building equipment.

Plant “Pnevmatyka” produces parts for tractors and other agricultural equipment.

The large food industry consists of meat-packing, oil and fat processing, canning, and confectionery manufacture. Vinnytsia confectionery is one of the biggest confectioneries of Ukraine. It is a part of corporation “Roshen”.

There are some technology service firms in Vinnytsia, for example, a Dutch IT-outsource company “Ciklum”, a technology service firm “Frog (Aricent Group)” and others.

Transport of Vinnytsia includes urban trolleybus, tram, bus, rout taxi, suburban and long-distance buses, rail, river and air transport. Gavryshivka International Airport is situated in Vinnytsia. Since the end of World War II, Vinnytsia has been the home for a major Soviet Air Forces base, including an airfield, a hospital, arsenals, and other military installations. The Ukrainian Air Force Command has been based in Vinnytsia since 1992.

Vinnytsia gives an opportunity to become a well-educated person. There are practically all kinds of educational establishments in the city. Among them are such higher schools: Vinnytsia National Technical University, Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University, Vinnytsia National Medical University, Vinnytsia National Agricultural University, Vinnytsia Institute of Trade and Economy, Vinnytsia Technical College, Vinnytsia Professional School of Arts and Culture.

Citizens of Vinnytsia are proud of notable people from Vinnytsia. They are: Nataliya Dobrynska (b.1982) who won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, Pavlo Khnykin (b.1969) who won two silver medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky (1864–1913) – Ukrainian author of novels and short stories, Mykola Leontovych (1877–1921) – Ukrainian composer who worked here, Nikolai Pirogov (1810–1881) – surgeon, pedagog and public figure, and many others.

Vinnytsia is a very nice city with green parks, historical architecture, sport facilities and a lot of romantic places to meet at.
