      Formal (business and important messages) Informal (friends and family)
Style     Don’t use slang, exclamation marks or smileys. E.g. Thank you for your prompt response. Be friendly, you can use slang, smileys and exclamation. E.g. Thx 4 email! (Thanks for your e-mail).
Beginning     Dear Mr. / Mrs. / Chris, Dear Sir / Madam, I am writing to enquire about… I am writing in reference to… Hi Chris, Great to hear from you! Thanks for your email! I’m writing to tell you…
Ending     Yours sincerely / Sincerely (if you know their names) Yours faithfully (if you don’t know their names) Regards Kind / Best regards Thank you (for your patience and cooperation/for your consideration) I look forward to hearing from you (use first name if you know the person or if they have asked you to) To not so close friends: I’m really looking forward to seeing you! I hope to hear from you soon, See you soon, Best wishes, That's all my news. To close friends and family members: Love, Cheers, All the best, Must go now. Take care, Hugs, Talk to you later (TTYL), See ya or cya (Am.), Peace, Later, Chiao (ciao)
Contractions     No contractions can be used. Only full forms: I am We are You are Will not Was not E.g. I will not be able to come to the meeting. Contractions can be used:   Common contractions: I’m We’re You’re Won’t Wasn’t E.g. I won’t be able to come to the party.
