Katya’s Day

Katya Voronina is a first-year Bachelor student at the faculty of Applied Mathematics, Computational Technology and Physics of Vologda State University. If you are not from Vologda and live far from the administrative centre you can either rent a room or live in a hall of residence. Katya has decided to live in a hall of residence because it is much cheaper and you can always share textbooks and notes of the lectures. Katya shares a room with two other first-year students called Marina and Valentina. Marina is doing History. Valentina is studying Physical Education. Marina and Katerina are classmates from Nikolsk and Valentina comes from Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Their hall of residence is situated in Gorodskoy Val Street. That's why they have to get up rather early to avoid traffic jams and be on time for their classes. Classes usually begin at 8 o’clock. So Katya sets her alarm for 6.30 (half past six a.m.). But when it goes off, she doesn't get up at once and lies in bed for several minutes. After getting up she goes to the bathroom to wash and clean her teeth. Then she comes back to her room, where she gets dressed, does her hair and makes up her face.

At about 6.45 (a quarter to seven) Katya has breakfast. She usually has a cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich for breakfast. She also likes breakfast cereal with milk.

At 7.15 (a quarter past seven) the students leave the hall of residence and walk to the nearest bus-stop. Then they take a number 8 or 16 bus and go as far as Stary Rynok or Leningradskaya bus-stop. It takes them about twenty minutes to get there if the traffic is not very heavy. On their way to the University the girls always discuss their studies and teachers.

Katya comes to the University ten or fifteen minutes before the bell. So she has time to get ready for her lessons. They usually have three or four classes a day. First comes a lecture, then one or two classes and a seminar. For example, on Tuesday they have a lecture on Philosophy, an English class, a Geometry class and a seminar on History.

After the second class from 11 (eleven) to 11.30 (half past eleven) they have a lunch break. During the long break the students go to the r efectory on the first floor. But it is always crowded there and you can come late for the third class. That's why Katya and her groupmates prefer to have a snack at the coffee bar in another building or take a cup of coffee from the coffee machine on the ground floor. Students also have short breaks that last for ten minutes.

Classes are over at 12.55 (five to one p.m.) or 14.30 (half past two p.m.). After classes Katya doesn't always go straight to the hall of residence. Sometimes she has to go to the library or to the reading-room to prepare for practical classes or to write a report. On the way home the roommate s go shopping. As a rule, they do it in turn. When Katya comes home, she makes herself a cup of tea. After having tea the girls cook something more substantial. They have supper at 5 p.m.

After washing-up they spend two or three hours preparing for their classes - doing exercises, writing essays, learning by heart. Sometimes their homework takes them all evening.

On week-days Katya goes to bed at about 11 p.m. She is very tired. Before falling asleep, she likes to read something, to surf the Net, to chat with her former classmates on the Internet.

At the weekend the girls go to the cinema, theatre, night club or take a walk in the centre of the town. From time to time they get together with their fellow student s and have a party. Once a week they visit their relatives who live in Vologda. The girls miss their families very much. Unfortunately, they can visit them only on holidays.
