Among the staff of any medical university there are academician s, corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Highly - skilled teachers share their knowledge and experience with their young colleague s and students.

Every University has several faculties and trains highly qualified specialists: physician s, pharmacist s, pediatrician s, dentist s, and surgeon s who successfully work not only in Russia, but in many other countries.

Traditionally, the course of studies lasts for 6 years. The training includes lectures, practical classes, laboratory studies and clinical training. Medical education is divided into preclinical and clinical studies. During the first two years students study fundamental disciplines necessary for their future training and work. These are biology, chemistry, physics, human anatomy, histology, Latin and foreign languages, and others. From the beginning of the 3rd year, students study special subjects such as operative surgery, pathology, pharmacology and others.

During the following senior courses students attend clinics where they get serious practical skills and gain experience in working with patients. They are trained in various fields of medicine such as internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, surgery and dentistry.

After completion of the 6th year and passing state exams, the graduates are awarded the Doctor of Medicine degree and receive their Diplomas. Later on students are trained in the internship and residency, or take the postgraduate course in different branches of medicine. They get specialization, improve their knowledge and skills, and work on their theses.

Nowadays, all Medical Universities have a complex of buildings, research laboratories, large sports halls, and comfortable hostel s. Every University has a large library where students can borrow textbooks and periodicals. Libraries are fully computerized, and students can get access to the Internet and the medical databases.
