Для того чтобы правильно выполнить контрольную работу 2, необходимо знать следующие грамматические темы:

1. Видовременные формы глагола: активный залог – формы Indefinite, Continuous, Perfect; пассивный залог – формы Indefinite.

2. Причастие настоящего (Participle I) и прошедшего (Participle II) времени.

3. Модальные глаголы: can, may, must, to have to, to be able to, should, could.

4. Функции и перевод it, that, one.

Higher Education in the United States

1. The most common type of higher education in the United States is the college. The American college is known by various titles such as the college of liberal arts, the college of arts and sciences and the college of literature, science and arts. The college may be the central unit around which the university is organized or it may be a separate corporate entity independent from the University.

2. The word «university», however, is also used in a broader sense for almost any type of educational institution offering instruction beyond the level of the secondary school. Thus in the United States there is some confusion in the use of the terms «college» and «university». Some institutions that are in fact colleges of liberal arts have been incorporated in the universities. Some institutions incorporated in colleges are in fact universities with graduate schools (магистратура) and professional schools (профессиональная школа).

3. The average college course of study is 4 years. The academic year is usually 9 months or 2 terms of four and a half months each. Classes usually begin in September and end in June. The first-year students are called freshmen.

4. Students choose a major subject and take many courses in this subject. After four years they get a traditional Bachelor's degree. Then the students may go on to graduate school (старшие курсы) and with a year or two of further study get a Master's degree. The student's progress is evaluated by means of tests, term works and final examinations in each course. The student's work is given a mark usually on

The history of the Angarsk State Technical Academy goes back to 1960 when a branch of Irkutsk Polytechnic Institute was established in Angarsk.

Nowadays the Academy has three modern buildings with well-equipped labs and studies, a big library and a reading hall. It is provided with a gym complex including swimming pool and various sports facilities. There are also video-classes and computer studies. More than three thousand students study at the Academy and their number is constantly increasing.

The Academy has two forms of tuition: full-time and extra-mural. There are three departments: department of technology, cybernetics and department of business and management. Most of the students have to pay for the training course. However, some students are able to get education free of charge.

The students study mathematics, physics, chemistry, theoretical mechanics, strength of materials, foreign language, history and many special subjects. Teaching staff consists of 200 doctors, candidates and specialists. The training course lasts 4 years. The academic year is divided into two terms. At the end of each term the students have to take credit tests and exams.

The students of our Academy get following specialities: economist, electronics engineer, civil engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer and others. The students begin to study special subjects at the second course. They have practice at plants and construction sites of our town.

The undergraduates do their final thesis and after proving it they get a diploma. Graduates of the Academy now occupy key posts in industry, commerce and public services around the country.

Environment Protection Must Be Global

At present scientists in industrially developed countries are working on the theory of interaction of all the atmospheric and oceanic global processes that determine the climate and weather of the world. Increasing growth of

population, industrialization and the use of resources are slowly but surely changing the global climate and water balance. This can be described as a great experiment one that may bring about changes in the environment more serious than ever before.

The essential feature in the environment protection is that many problems can be solved only on the level of world community (сообщество). Therefore the planning of protection against pollution by human society as a whole (в целом) is imperative today and in the near future. It is necessary to develop an international program to study data on land, forest, atmospheric and oceanic resources both renewable and non-renewable. It is the joint efforts of many scientists and special public organizations that can deal with the problem and take necessary measures to protect the environment.

Environment Protection

The poisoning of the world's land, air and water is the fastest-spreading disease of civilization.

Overpopulation, pollution and energy consumption have created such planet-wide problems as massive deforestation, ozone depletion, acid rains and the global warming that is believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect.

The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it one day nothing will be able to live in the seas.

Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it one million species that are alive today will have become extinct twenty years from now.

Air pollution is a very serious problem. In Cairo just breathing the air is life threatening – equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for Mexico City and 600 cities of our country.

Industrial enterprises emit tons of harmful substances. These emissions have disastrous consequences for our planet. They are the main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid rains.

People are beginning to realize that environmental problems are not somebody else's. They join and support various international organizations and green parties. If governments wake up to what is happening – perhaps we'll be able to avoid the disaster that threatens the natural world and all of us with it.
