Exercise 11. Match the words in the box to the correct definitions:

football, badminton, golf, basketball, water polo, chess, ping-pong, ice hockey

1.... is a game for two players. They have rackets. They hit a shuttle­cock over a net.

2.... is a game played on an ice field by two teams of six players each.

3.... is a game in which two teams of five players bounce and pass a ball down a court to score by sinking the ball into a fixed net basket.

4.... is a game in which you use long sticks called clubs to hit a small ball into holes in a fine grassy patch.

5.... is an outdoor game for two teams of eleven players who try to put the ball in a goal at each end of a field.

6.... is a game for two players who have sixteen figures which they move on a board. They must trap the opponent's king to win the game.

7.... is an indoor game for two or sometimes four players who hit a small plastic ball across a net.

*Exercise 12. Read and translate short dialogues, dramatize them, answering by your own where possible:

1. A: What team are you rooting for?
B: I am rooting for Chelsea.
A: Me too.

2. A: Who is playing today?
B: Today’s match is Swiss national football team vs. Three Lions (England).

3. A: Which team won the game?
B: Three Lions did.
A: Wonderful! What was the score?
B: Three to nil.

4. A: You look happy. Did the Arsenal win? What’s the score?
B: Five to three (5: 3) in their favour.
A: Congratulations!

5. A: How did the match end?
B: It ended in a draw.

6. A: Do you know the news? Chelsea has lost the game.
B: You don’t say so!

7. A: You like golf, don’t you?
B: I like to watch it, but unfortunately I can’t play it.
A: I am sorry for you. It’s a wonderful game.

8. A: They are showing a football match on channel 3.
B: Let’s switch on the TV set.

9. A: Switch over to channel 1. They are showing the world championship.
B: I am going to see it by all means.

10. A: Let’s change to channel 10 and watch the wrestling matches.
B: Yes, dear. Anything you want.

11. A: I am going to take part in the competition.
B: I wish you good luck.
A: Thank you.

 

*Exercise 13. Pair work. Complete the dialogue with the phrases from the box and act it out:

I quite like... (e.g. swimming) I enjoy I like Well, I really like watching it I participate in...

 

A: Do you enjoy...?

B:... dancing. And you?

A:... but I don't like doing it very much.

B: What about other sports?

A: Well, I... but my sister Ann really hates it.

 

*Exercise 14. Work in pairs. Make similar dialogues about the pictures given below. Act them out for your group mates:


 

**Exercise 15. Make up your own dialogues discussing sports in Great Britain and Ukraine.

**Exercise 16. a) Copy the table given below and do a survey:

What sport do you play in your free time?    
How regularly do you train?    
Have you ever competed?    
Why do you play sports? (e. g. to keep fit, for fun, to lose weight etc)    
If you could start any sport tomorrow, what sport would it be?    
What dangerous / extreme sports have you tried? If none, which would you like to try?    
Which sport would you take up if you could afford it?    

b) Speak in group. What have you found out about your groupmate?

**Exercise 17. Compare sport and games in Ukraine and Great Britain.Which are the most interesting for you?
