The father, having taken his morning bath and performed Viñ ë u and Vaiñ ë ava arcana and Sä ttvikaVå ddhi Ç rä ddha, should perform Kuç andikä to the end of Virupä kñ a Japa, calling the fire named “Ç uci.”

He should offer ghee-soaked wood of prä deç a length into the fire silently and perform Vyasta Samasta Mahä vyä hå ti Homa:

oà bhuvaù svä hä - idam acyutä ya idam na mama

oà svaù svä hä - idam nä rä yaë ä ya idam na mama

oà bhü r bhuvaù svaù svä hä - idam anantä ya idam na mama

He should offer an oblation of mahä prasä dam rice into the fire, saying:

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré mad ananto devatä

puruñ ä dhi-patyä rthasya catuñ pathe agnau anantä bhimukhasya ä jya home viniyogaù

oà mahä prasä dannaà vai ekam chandasyaà

tat hi ekaà bhü tebhyaù chandayati svä hä -

idam sarva bhü tebhyaù idam na mama

“This mahä prasä da rice is an offering for the bhü tas.”

The father should offer oblations of ghee with the following mantras:

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré mad ananto devatä

puruñ ä dhi-patyä rthasya catuñ pathe agnau anantä bhimukhasya ä jya home viniyogaù

oà ç ré ù vai eñ ä yat sattvano virocano

saì karñ aë o mayi sattvaà avadhä tu svä hä -

idam saì karñ aë ä ya idam na mama

“This offering is for prosperity. May Virocana, Sattvana, Saì karñ aë a bestow truth in me.”

ç ré mad ananto devatä

puruñ ä dhi-patyä rthasya catuñ pathe agnau anantä bhimukhasya ä jya home viniyogaù

oà annasya ghå tam-eva rasaù -tejaù

sampadä rtha tad anantä ya juhomi svä hä -

idam anantä ya idam na mama

“Among food ghee is happiness, beauty, strength and nobility. I offer it to Ananta for all success.”

mahä prasä da-sevana vå ttyavicchattyarthasya sä yaà prä taù kñ uddhame viniyogaù

oà viñ ë ave kñ udhe svä hä - idam viñ ë ave idam na mama

“To Viñ ë u for hunger.”

ç ré mad ananto devatä

mahä prasä da-sevana vå ttyavicchattyarthasya sä yaà prä taù kñ uddhame viniyogaù

oà ç ré viñ ë ave kñ uta pipä sä bhyä à svä hä - idam viñ ë ave idam na mama

“To Viñ ë u for hunger and thirst.”

He should offer oblations to the five life airs, saying:

oà prä ë ä ya svä hä - idam prä ë ä ya idam na mama

oà apä nä ya svä hä - idam apä nä ya idam na mama

oà samä nä ya svä hä - idam samä nä ya idam na mama

oà udä nä ya svä hä - idam udä nä ya idam na mama

oà vyä nä ya svä hä - idam vyä nä ya idam na mama

He should then perform Vyasta Samasta Mahä vyä hå ti Homa and throw ghee-soaked wood of prä deç a length into the fire silently.

He should perform Ñ ä ö yä yana Homa, Vä madevya Gä ë am and the other rites of Udicya Karma. He should give dakñ ië ä to the initiated Vaiñ ë avas and brä hmaë as.

He should then feed the child grains saying:

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

bå haté chandaù

ç ré acyuto devatä

kumä rasya mahä prasä dä nna-prä ç ane viniyogaù

oà acyuta

annapate annasya no dhehy-anamé vasya ç uç minaù

pradä tä raà tä riñ aù urjaà no dhehi dvipade catuñ pade svä hä

oà prä ë ä ya svä hä

“Oh Acyuta master of food, bestow food which gives strength and which is free from disease. You should lead the performer of sacrifice onwards. Give strength to us and the animals. I make this sacrifice to the prä ë a.”

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

ç ré janä rdano devatä

kumä rasya mahä prasä dä nna-prä ç ane viniyogaù

oà janä rdana

annapate kå nuta annaà no dhehi pé yuñ a

asä ktaà te ‘nnaà yad yad yuge no dhehi dvipade catuñ pade svä hä

oà apä nä ya svä hä

“Oh Janä rdana, Lord of sustenance and food, provide our sustenance, bestow Your food of bliss and immortality. At all times bestow upon us, both human and beast. I make this sacrifice to the apä na.”

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré lakñ mé -nä rä yaë au devate

kumä rasya mahä prasä dä nna-prä ç ane viniyogaù

oà lakñ mé nä rä yaë au

annapaté annaà amå taà no dhehi kamalä saà skå taà

te bhukta ç eñ aà no dhehi dvipade catuñ pade svä hä

oà samä nä ya svä hä

“Oh Lakñ mé -Nä rä yaë a, rulers of sustenance, give us the food of immortality, prepared by Lakñ mé herself. Bestow upon us Your remnants, to the humans and the animals alike. I make this sacrifice to the samä na.”

ç ré yajï o devatä

kumä rasya mahä prasä dä nna-prä ç ane viniyogaù

oà annapate yajï a annaà adhiyajï aà tvadé yaà

no dhehi sarva durlabhaà mä nuñ yaà vai sudhä yutaà

no dhehi dvipade catuñ pade svä hä

oà udä nä ya svä hä

“Oh Lord of sustenance, give us Your principal sacrifice, the food of that sacrifice. Bestow to us the human form and nature so hard ot attain, made eternal. Bestow that to us, humans and animals alike. I make this sacrifice to the udä na.”

ç ré janä rdano devatä

kumä rasya mahä prasä dä nna-prä ç ane viniyogaù

oà annapate janä rdana ñ aò rasam amå ta siktaà

niveditaà te sad annaà no dhehi kilbiç ä pahaà

no dhehi dvipade catuñ pade svä hä

oà vyä nä ya svä hä

“Oh Janä rdana, give to us, both man and beast, Your eternal food, that which has been offered to You, soaked with the nectar of the six flavors, and capable of destroying all sins. I make this sacrifice to the vyä na.”

After the Anna Prä ç ana ceremony, he should give as much dakñ ië ä that he possibly can to all the initiated Vaiñ ë avas and to all the vaiñ ë ava-brä hmaë as. He should serve (prasä da) to all the devotees, guests and other living entities.

After the Anna Prä ç ana the next saà skä ra is Pü tra Mü rdhä bhighrä ë am

This ends the Anna Prä ç ana rites.

Putra Mü rdhä bhighrä ë am

(Smelling the Son’s Head):

This may be performed after the Anna Prä ç ana ceremony, while giving blessings, when the father returns from a long journey.

The father should wash his feet, perform ä camana and facing East hold the childs’ head (or the eldest son’s head first, if there are more than one son), saying:

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

anuñ ö up chandaù

ç ré padmanä bho devatä

pü trasya mü rddhanam upasaà gå hya jape viniyogaù

oà aì gä t aì gä t saà ç ravasi

hå dayä t adhijä yase

prä ë am te prä ë eë a saà dadhä mi

jé va me yä vad ä yuñ am

“Breath of life, from limb to limb you flow. From the heart you conquer. Oh son, to you by my breathing I give life. Live a long life for me.”

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré viñ ë uù devatä

pü trasya mü rddhanam upasaà gå hya jape viniyogaù

oà aì gä t aì gä t saà bhavasi

hå dayä t adhijä yase

vedo vai putranä mä si

saà jé va ç aradaù ç atam

“From limb to limb you flow. From the heart you conquer. Your name is the Veda, eternal knowledge. Live a hundred autumns, a hundred harvests.”

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré nä rä yaë o devatä

pü trasya mü rddhanam upasaà gå hya jape viniyogaù

oà asmä bhava paraç uù bhava

hiraë yä à amå taà bhava

ä tmä si putra mä må thä ù

saà jé va ç aradaù ç atam

“Be like a stone, be like a thunderbolt, be immortal wealth. Oh son, you are my very self. Do not die. Live a hundred autumns.”

He should smell the child’s head, saying:

oà prajä patiù viñ ë u å ñ iù

anuñ ö up chandaù

ç ré puruñ ottamo devatä

pü tra mü rddhä bhighrä ë e viniyogaù

oà paç ü nä à tvä hià kä reë a

abhijighrä mi (name of son)dä sa

“Oh....(name of son), making a sound like the breathing of the cows, I smell your head.”

He should then apologize for any faults in the ceremony (acchidra vä canam):
