Hello! I’d like to tell you about my Railway Institute. I am really glad that I am studying here. This year I have left school and entered Krasnoyarsk Institute of Railway Engineering. Its full name is Krasnoyarsk Branch of Irkutsk State Railway Transport University. Entrance to our University is competitive. As an applicant I took three entrance exams, which were rather difficult. I am in my first year. I am studying economics. It is difficult but really interesting.

My Institute is not very old. It was founded in 1955. First, it was a consultation center of the All-Union distant Institute of Railway Engineers. A total number of students was 500 and the teaching staff consisted of 10 people. Its first Rector’s name was Alexey Dvoretsky. Later my institute became the Branch of the Siberian Railway Transport University, Novosibirirsk University being its head university. In 2002 my University was named Krasnoyarsk Branch of Irkutsk State Railway Transport University. In 2006 it was renamed Krasnoyarsk Institute of Railway Transport.

Now my Institute is one of the centers for training qualified specialists with higher education for Krasnoyarsk Railway. Engineers are trained for eleven specialities. They are operation management, construction, electric power supply, wagons and coaches, automation and telecommunication, economics, accounting, safety of technological processes, electric transport, information systems, personnel management. Now about 1.400 students are currently enrolled here. They are full-time students and students of distant education.

My Institute is large and we have several buildings. There are many large lecture halls for lectures and classrooms. My Institute offers extensive technical facilities that are necessary for teaching students: (computer) service center and computer classes, Internet and Intranet, television, video and multimedia equipment, a library with a reading room. The laboratories and shops are equipped with an up-to-date equipment. Students can carry on laboratory works and conduct various experiments. Some students of my group do their own research work and have their theses published. Besides, we have a small railway section and some rolling stock at our disposal.

Students from other cities live in the hostel. But I don’t. I rent an apartment. I can improve my health attending a skiing stadium, a swimming pool and sports activities. A lot of students take part in sports competitions in wrestling, boxing, soccer, skiing, skating and so on. They often win city prizes.The parties spent at our University and a number of amateur art circles help students to adapt to students’ life. The students are able to take part in subject contests and scientific conferences that take place annually.

My future speciality is great but difficult to study. My institute gives a solid background in all spheres of knowledge and prepares for practical work. We study various subjects – humanities, technical subjects, economical subjects and sciences. The academic year is divided into two terms. The students take credit-tests and exams at the end of each term. The course of studies at my institute lasts five years. In the fifth course our students are to submit their diploma-theses. The students of the Krasnoyarsk Branch can go on their studies in Novosibirsk and Irkutsk after the second or third course. There is a lunchroom and a canteen in my Institute. The canteen is very cosy. The food there is tasty and the prices are reasonable.
