Exercise 10. In which of the following sentences do the tenses not change? Why? Then, turn the following statements from direct into reported speech.






1. ‘I’ll paint the house next week, ’ he says.

Tenses do not change because the introductory verb is in the present simple. He says (that) he will paint the house next week.

2. ‘I’ve put the washing in the washing-machine, ’ Rose said.

3. ‘A giraffe is bigger than a mouse, ’ he said.

4. ‘We haven’t seen Tom for two weeks, ’ she said.

5. ‘I haven’t phoned my uncle since last month, ’ she says.

6. ‘Birds can fly, ’ the student said.

7. ‘Leaves fall from the trees in autumn, ’ he said.

8. ‘He’s studying for his exam now, ’ she said.

9. ‘We visited the circus last weekend, ’ they said.

10. ‘She dropped the vase on the floor, ’ Tony said.

11. ‘He took the money to the bank this morning, ’ she said.

12. ‘The Dnieper flows into the Black See, ’ the teacher said.

Exercise 11. Turn the following sentences into reported speech.

1. He said, ‘I’m going to the staition.’

2. Tina said, ‘You should exercise regularly.’

3. They said, ‘We had booked the room before we left.’

4. Tom said, ‘The meal is delicious.’

5. ‘I’ve written you a letter, ’ she said to her friend.

6. ‘We’ve decided to spend our holidays in Jordan, ’ they told us.

7. Jill said, ‘I’ll go to the bank tomorrow.’

8. She said to him, ‘We’ve been invited to a wedding.’

9. She told me, ‘You must leave early tomorrow.’

10. ‘They’ve gone out for the evening, ’ Jessie said to me.

11. They said, ‘We may visit Joe tonight.’

12. She said, ‘I can meet you on Tuesday.’

13. Keith said, ‘There is a letter for you on the table.’

14. ‘We won’t be visiting Tom this evening, ’ Sam told us.

15. Eric said, ‘They had been talking on the phone for an hour before I interrupted them.’

16. ‘I haven’t spoken to Mary since last week, ’ Gloria said.

17. ‘They delivered the letters this morning, ’ she said.

18. He said, ‘I’d like to buy this jumper.’

19. ‘They aren’t going on holiday this year, ’ he said.

20. Jane said, ‘I haven’t finished my homework yet.’

21. ‘I’m going to bed early tonight, ’ Caroline said.

22. ‘My mother is coming to visit us, ’ I said.

23. ‘We don’t want to watch a film tonight, ’ the children said.

24. ‘He’s playing in the garden now, ’ his mother said.

25. She said, ‘You must do your homework now.’

Exercise 12. Here some things Sarah said to you:

  1. I’ve never been to the United States.
  2. I can’t drive.
  3. I’m working tomorrow evening.
  4. I don’t like fish.
  5. Jane is a friend of mine.
  6. I don’t have any brothers or sisters.
  7. Jane has a very well-paid job.
  8. Dave is lazy.

But later Sarah says something different to you. What do you say? Act out.

Sarah You
  1. Dave works very hard.
  2. Let’s have fish for dinner.
  3. I’m going to buy a car.
  4. Jane is always short of money.
  5. My sister lives in Paris.
  6. I think New York is a great place.
  7. Let’s go out tomorrow evening.
  8. I’ve never spoken to Jane.
