The Young Victoria

I. Questions:

1. During that epoch ladies were wearing corsets and bell-shaped skirts; and men were wearing tight-fitting, calf length frock coats and a waistcoat or vest. That time family relations as long as social ones were very formal. Balls were held due to every social event.

2. “Kensington system of education”- when someone tastes princess food, and she couldn’t go to school with other children and red popular books, she could not sleep alone without mama and walk downstairs without holding an arm of an adult all these rules are for royal kids protection.

3. Quarrels:

· Victoria quarreled with Sir John because he wants her to sign order for regency, but she didn’t want to.

· The Duchess quarreled with the King of England because she has got a bad adviser (Sir John) and the King is angry with Conroy who tried to force the Princess Victoria's agreement to Regency. And he thinks that the Duchess like all the lieges must obey he’s orders.

4. She has not read many novels, but she read one The Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter, also she likes drawing, dolls, piano, music, she permitted only opera and ballet, The Puritan is the favorite one. She likes modern composers.

Albert must win her favor before anyone else, so he couldn’t do any mistakes. And he is afraid of dancing.

5. Victoria was caught between two royal uncles: The King of England – William 5 and The King of Belgians – Leopold 1.

6. Characters:

· Sir John Conroy- is adviser of the Duchess (Victoria’s mother); he is waiting for Kings’ death, because he wants make Victoria sign an order for regency; he’s cruel and dishonest person.

· Lord Melbourne – is a Prime Minister and liberal leader; he is an adviser of Victoria; he as all politicians try to rich his aim with the help of Queen and it’s doesn’t matter for him how this will influence the Crown; he’s clever and foxy men.

· Leopold I – is the King of Belgians and Victoria’s uncle, he needs the support of England and for a long time he was preparing the marriage of Prince Albert and Victoria to achieve his political goals.

· William IV – the King of GB and Victoria’s uncle; he likes Victoria and never let anyone to make her agree for regency although she’s so young; he’s independent and say whatever he thinks.

· Albert, Prince Consort – is a nephew of Leopold 1 and Victoria’s husband; he’s honest and kind men who deeply in love with Victoria; he helped her all his live while she was rulling the country.

7. England is the key to peace in Europe. Leopold’s throne is six years old and born of civil war. He only took the crown of Belgium because England pledged her support. And if he's to survive, he must have English force at his disposal.

8. Influence: She feels like herself like a chess piece. In a game being played against her will. She sees The Duchess, Sir John, Uncle Leopold and The King leaning in and moving her around the board. She’s sure half the politicians are ready to seize hold of her skirts and drag her from square to square.

9. Related kings: the King of the Belgians is Cobourg, also the King of Portugal and the Queen’s of England mother too.

10. Political situation in GB: The prime minister is Lord Melbourne. Tory party is ruling the country; Robert Pill is going to be the next Prime Minister but he will lose. Victoria is a liberal and the most sympathetic to Lord Melbourne.

11. King wants Victoria to marry her cousin George; also one of the pretenders to enter in a marriage with Victoria is Prince Albert, and it can be Lord Melbourne. Victoria’s words about marriage: Victoria wonders what for she need to marry, if she do it she will please herself but not her mom, uncle Leopold, the King or anyone else.

12. Victoria’s role in history: She feels herself like a chess piece. In a game being played against her will. She sees people leaning in and moving her around the board.

13. Lord Melbourne liberal leader who puts the interests of England above those of Europe; we wouldn’t spill one drop of British blood to save the foreign throne and this is not useful to Belgians.

14. Lord Melbourne can make Victoria fall in love with him. It's his method. And others think that they shouldn’t underestimate Melbourne.

15. In that letter King of GB writes that he increases Victoria’s income, once she’s 18 he asks to see her at Court.

16. Lord M is like a tutor to Victoria, he chosen her household because he understands all these things and he is going to help Victoria with everything. But her aunt thinks that Victoria may dream of independence, but she won't get it. From now on, everyone will push her and pull her for their own advantage. Melbourne more than the rest. Victoria must remember, she is the Queen, he's a politician.

17. The main problem is that Lord M becomes new Prime Minister. Sir Peel is angry because he’s not qualified to form a government if he does not enjoy Victoria’s confidence. Sir Peel is frightened to see the Crown is used as a shuttlecock in the game of politics.Maids of honor supported candidacy of Lord M, but not Sir Peel.

18. Victoria listens to Queen Adelaide advice and let Albert to reorganize the way the palace run.

19. Victoria is angry with her husband because he behaves like she’s a child. She’s offended because he behaves like she’s just a woman to be petted and passed over and ignored. But Albert thinks that she’s just three years on the throne and Lord M pushes the Monarchy to the brink of abyss.

20. Prince Albert is a good man. A better than any of them knew. He is able. Lord M thinks that Victoria must let Albert to share her work. And take him into her confidence.

II. Terms:

Regent – is a person who appointed to govern in a place of monarch who is absent, disabled or too young.

Spy - an individual who obtains information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information.

Descendants – a person who is descended from a particular ancestor.

Prime Minister- is the most senior minister of cabinet in the executive branch of government in a parliamentary system. In many systems, the prime minister selects and can dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the government.

Monarch - is the person who heads a monarchy. This is a form of government in which a state or polity is ruled or controlled by an individual who typically inherits the throne by birth and occasionally rules for life or until abdication.

Sovereign – a supreme ruler, especially a monarch.

Regents of GB: George IV (George Augustus Frederick; 12 August 1762 – 26 June 1830) was the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and also of Hanover from the death of his father, George III, on 29 January 1820 until his own death ten years later. I. Questions:

1. Plot: In 1997, after the death of Lady Di in a car accident in Paris, the reluctant Queen and The Establishment do not accept to honor the " People's Princess" as a member of the Royal Family. However, the public and the media question the utility of the monarchy and the just-elected Prime Minister Tony Blair advises the Queen to make a public speech mourning the loss of Diana.

2. Robin: On the one hand his background is quite establishment. Father a Conservative. A public school education at Fettes, where he was tutored by the same man as the Prince of Wales. On the other, his manifesto promises the most radical modernization and shake-up of the Constitution in three hundred years. He's married to a woman with known anti- Monarchist sympathies - you may remember her curtsey the first time you met. It could best be described as `shallow'.

3. Fettes College is an independent school for boarding and day pupils in Edinburgh, Scotland with over two thirds of its pupils in residence on campus. It is sometimes referred to as a public school, although strictly speaking this only applies to the English schools covered by the Public Schools Acts.

The Queen and her mother consider that Diana was not a part of royal family and she can’t be buried like a member of royal family, especially using the plan of the Queen’s mother funeral.23. The Police Commissioner was keen that the Queen considers the idea of a condolence book. It would give the growing crowds something to do. Make marshalling them easier.24. Relations of Tony Blair and Queen was very strained in the beginning, because Blair was wishing to modernize the country and Queen’s views was very conservative; then during the period connected with Diana’s death and Queen’s reaction on it, the Queen consider Blair as a annoying stupid man who is not familiar with British traditions and real wishes of British people; but then the Queen finally listened to Blair’s advises and this corrected the whole situation and the conflict was solved; at the end the Queen admitted that Blair is a clever and modern PM who knew about nowadays British people more than her and understanding occurred among them two.27. Tony’s relation to the Queen: It’s impossible to imagine this country as republic, especially during her reign; Tony’s words about Queen: “That woman has given her whole life in service to her people - fifty years doing a job she NEVER wanted - a job she watched kill her father. She's executed it with dignity, honor and, as far as I can tell, without a single blemish.28. Mrs. Blair talk with Tony Blair about Monarchy: “People really DO want change. And want YOU to give it to them. One in six people now support the idea of getting rid of the Monarchy. Imagine this country without them? With a nice elected Head of State? ”29. Mr. Father of the Nation it’s the way Alastair called Tony Blair.30. Trooping the Colour is a ceremony performed by regiments of the British and the Commonwealth armies. Official Queen’s Birthday, Victory in Europe Day, Victory over Japan Day.31. The British mane Blair as Mr. " Savior of the Monarchy", because he did everything he can to make the Queen change her decision about the death of Diana. The Queen has listened to him and this solved all the problems.32. 1. Characters:

· H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II – she was old and conservative woman, who became the Queen being very young and that’s why she was proud of her experience. She always followed the traditions and it’s difficult for her to be so to say modern.

· Tony Blair – young and active PM. Who was willing to modernize the whole country; during the story his relations with the Queen changed a lot. He sill respected her and always tried to understand her position and behavior. He was accepted by the whole nation.

· HRH The Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) – the husband of the Queen, also very conservative man, who always supported her. He thought that she always must take a tough stance. He disliked PM.

· Cherie Blair – the PM’s wife. She was against the monarchy and wanted her husband to reform the country.

· HRH The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles)- the queen’s son and Diana’s ex-husband who was very regret about the Diana’s death, because of their kids and Queen’s behavior in that situation. Supported PM.

· Robin Janvrin (Lord Janvrin) - Janvrin is Private Secretary to the Queen, although he was the Deputy Private Secretary at the time of Diana's death. Interesting and clever man who always helped the Queen.

· HM Queen Elizabeth, - The Queen Mother, the same with all elder members of royal family. Conservative lady, whom the Queen was asking for advises.

2. The Queen’s speech:

Since last Saturday's dreadful news we have seen, throughout Britain and the world, an overwhelming expression of sadness at Diana's death. We have all been trying in our different ways to cope. The initial shock is often succeeded by a mixture of other feelings. Disbelief, incomprehension, anger and concern for those who remain. We have all felt these emotions in these last few days. So what I say to you now, as your Queen and as a grandmother, I say from my heart. I hope that tomorrow we can all, wherever we are, join in expressing our grief at Diana's loss, and gratitude for her all-too-short life. May those who died rest in peace and may we, each and every one of us. Thank God for someone who made many, many people happy.

3. In my opinion this scene showed the real character of the Queen. She was a kind woman, who was willing to save dear. And we can see how much she was upset when she found out that the dear was shoot.

4. I always liked historical movies and those based on the real events. The Queen is one of such movies, I liked the story and the actors except the actor playing PM. Firstly I totally disliked Queen’s behavior and her attitude to Diana’s death. But then I understood the reason of it and was happy when she listened to PM’s advises.
