Exercise 2. Find in the text synonyms to the following words:


to work out

a co-worker (2 words)

in confidence

to say bad things about somebody

in his/her absence

Exercise 4. Explain the meaning:

to rate something; a close friend; a spouse; siblings; a subordinate; a superior; superficial; one’s privacy; to repay a favour or a compliment; to break a rule; a fair share of the workload; to monitor somebody or something; to shut up; guidelines; to work cooperatively; to stand up for somebody in his/her absence; to denigrate somebody behind his/her back;

 

Exercise 5. Look at the vocabulary items below and sort them into two groups according to whether they normally carry a positive or negative connotation:

Exercise 7. Look up in a dictionary and explain the meaning of the English idiom ‘to buttonhole someone’. Do you like people who possess such a habit? Why?

2. What are the 5 “universal” rules applied to work relationships?

3. What do we call “good social skills”?

4. Do you think you possess good social skills? Why?

5. Who can we call a “Social friend”?

6. What is the difference between a “friend at work” and a “work-mate”?

7. What people are usually disliked at work?

8. What are the rules for dealing with people we dislike?

9. Do you agree with the rules mentioned in the text?

10. Are there any, which conflict with cultural traditions in Russia?

11. Can you add any other rules of relationships to the abovementioned?
