Before suffixes

Drop the - e before suffixes beginning with a vowel, such as - ing, - er, - able.
Keep it before consonants, such as – ly.

 

Word + -ing -ed -er -able - est -ly -s
write writing --- writer writable     Writes
come coming --- comer ---     comes
have having --- --- ---     has (exeption)
make making --- maker makeable     makes
use using used user useable/usable     uses
love loving loved lover loveable/lovable   love ly loves
change changing changed changer changeable     changes
manage managing managed manager manageable     manages
nice - - nicer - nicest nicely -

Exceptions:

1a. Keep the - e

in -ee, -oe, -ye and also in the verb to be
see - seeing, agree - agreeing, canoe - canoeist, dye - dyeing be - being  

1b. Keep it after the -ge - and the -ce - to keep them soft.

manage – manageable change - changeable knowledge - knowledgeable Notice - noticeable replace - replaceable service – serviceable

1c. Some words have two possible forms before -able.
like - likeable/likable

move - moveable/movable
love - loveable/lovable

Here are some common exceptions to the above rule:
