Образец: The role of computer in our work

Computers play an enormous role in our life. I can’t imagine life without a computer. But recently – about 30 years ago – people didn’t have computers at home and hardly ever heard about them.

What do I do on the computer? Well, first of all I need a PC for studies: I connect with the World Wide Web and search for the information, when I find it I read and download it to my files, sometimes I take graphic images and use different programs to make my own presentations for classes. Of course I type a lot of texts and the computer helps me with spelling and it is so easy to change and compose text files with PC word program and excel. Besides the Power Point Program is so interesting to work with!

The Internet access gives me an opportunity to chat with friends around the world; we can also see them on the web cam.

Computer combines in itself a TV, a library, radio, a typewriter, a memory book, an organizer and a lot more. Maybe in the future the computer will do all housework for ordinary people. It is a fantastic invention of the 20^th century and I have chosen to work on the computer as a job.

The first generation computers. In 1930 the first analog computer was built by American named Vannevar Bush. Many technical developments of electronic digital computers took place in the 1940s and 1950s.

o In 1946 two engineers at the University of Pennsylvania built the first digital computer with vacuum tubes.

o Another important achievement came in 1947. This is called the second generation of computers. The idea of keeping instructions inside the computer’s memory was developed. John von Neumann designed the machine that could both store data and instructions.

o Early computers, using vacuum tubes, could perform computations in thousands of seconds compared to mechanical devices.

Advances in electronics technology continued and microelectronics made it possible to reduce the size of transmitters and integrate large numbers of circuit elements into very small chips of silicon. These were called the third generation computers – 1960-1979. They could perform many data processing operations in nanoseconds which are billionths of seconds.

Fourth generation computers have now arrived. They have been greatly reduced in size. As many as 100 tiny circuits are placed now on a single chip. A chip is a square or rectangular piece of silicon upon which several layers of an integrated circuit are imprinted.
