Complete the following sentences with an appropriate conditional clause.

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES (type 3)

We use if + past perfect + would have + past participle for unreal situations in the past.

if clause Main clause

past perfect would have + past participle

 

We imagine a condition or situation in the past which was impossible or didn't happen.

If had looked,... (but you didn't look)

 

When the if clause comes first, we usually use a comma (,) after it. We can also put the main clause first.

I wouldn’t have knocked it off the table if you hadn't thrown the ball so high.

 

may, might for possibility

 

We use may or might + infinitive without to to talk about something that is possible now or in the future. Both mean 'perhaps'.

We may be able to stick it.

(= Perhaps we can stick it.)

She might not notice.

(= Perhaps she will not notice.)

 

 

1. Complete the sentences with the words in brackets in the past perfect or with would have + past participle.

Will you lend me your bike?

 

BEN Will you lend me your bike? I have to get to basketball training in five minutes.

 

NICK The last time I lent it to you, you got a flat tyre and didn't repair it.

 

BEN Well, I wouldn’t have got (not get) a flat tyre if you had put (put) enough air in it.

NICK That's not true. You rode straight over some broken glass.

BEN Well, I (1) __________________ (not ride) over the glass if someone

(2) ___________________ (left) it all over the road. Besides, I (3) __________ (go) round the glass, if a car (4) ___________ (not come) from the other direction. NICK Well, you could have stopped.

3. The people in the doctor's waiting room have all had accidents. Read what happened. Then make sentences with if, like this:
