Adjective order. Use your instinct. Complete the sentence with the bold words in the right order.

Exercise 1. Discuss in pairs if you agree or disagree with these sentences.

1 Sports clothes which had been designed by Kuralai Nurkadilova for Kazakhstan sportsmen in Olympic Games in Beijing were better than in previous Olympic Games.

2 Young people in Kazakhstan copy “street fashion” invented by the English.

3 The Kazakh people don’t like people who dress “differently” (it means: Punks, Goths, Kidjab and etc.)

 

 

Exercise 2. Idioms. Guess the meanings of cloth idioms.

a) Try to guess the meanings of these idioms:

1 What a dress! You’re really dressed to kill tonight.

2 That suit fits her like a glove. Did she have it especially made for her?

3 He will have to pull his socks up if he wants to pass the exam.

4 That sounds like a difficult situation. I wouldn’t like to be in your shoes.

 

b) Match the idioms with their meanings.

Exercise 3. You're going to listen to four people talking about the typical characteristics of people from their country (England, Ireland, Scotland, and the USA). Before you listen, with a partner try to predict what positive and negative characteristics the speakers might mention [Part III p. 164], [1, T 2.1, 2.2, p.122].

a) Listen (2.1) and try to match the speakers 1-4 with their nationality. Use their accent and what they say about people from their country to help you.

b) Listen again. Write down at least one negative and two positive characteristics about each nationality. Does each person think they are typical or not? Why (not)?

 

Exercise 4. Now listen to (2.2) two extracts from each speaker. Try to write in the missing words. What do you think they mean?

National wearing

For centuries, Kazakh national clothes were simple and rational. It was characterized by common forms for all segments of the population, but with a certain social and age regulations. Elegance to dresses was given by fur trim, embroidery and jewelry. Traditional materials for the clothes were leather, fur, thin felt, cloth, which was produced by the local population. Clothes sewn from imported materials - silk, brocade, velvet. Cotton was also widely used.
