Phrasal Verbs






Find phrases 1-6 in the article and choose the correct meaning of the phrasal verbs.

1 stand out from the crowd means seem different from/the same as everyone else

2 pass out means stop breathing/become unconscious

3 make something up means invent/use other people's information

4 see through someone means know that someone is lying/ask someone questions

5 stand up for something means say publicly/try to decide what you believe

6 look up to someone means be jealous of /respect someone

Write them down: Start a special page with phrasal verbs in your notebook. You don’t really need the translation; write it down only if you want to.

 

stand out (from/in the crowd) be different from everyone else выделяться из толпы She's the sort of person who stands out in a crowd.
pass out become unconscious потерять сознание People everywhere were passing out from the heat.
make smth up invent a story, esp. in order to trick or entertain smb. придумать что-то, «высосать из пальца» He made up some excuse about his daughter being sick.
see through someone know that someone is lying раскусить, видеть насквозь I’m not fooled that easily. I can see right through you.
stand up for something say publicly what you believe отстаивать, защищать You’ve got to stand up for what you believe in.
look up to someone respect someone уважать, равняться на к-то He’s a role model for other players to look up to.

be off 1) to be cancelled 2) to leave The concert was off I am off to bed
