EARLY VOYAGES ALONG THE ARCTIC COAST

After the founding of Mangazeia in 1 60, the new centre was often reached by sea.

In 1 602 a detachment of forty men in four vessels under Lev Ivanov Shubin arrived

from Kholmogory, wintered at the mouth of the Pechora River, crossed the Yamal

Peninsula by rivers and portages to the Ob estuary, and from there went up Taz to

Mangazeia.

Others followed and soon the voyage became commonplace. In 1 6 0 sixteen

vessels, with a total of 1 50 men, visited Mangazeia.

In the same year, as mentioned portaged to the small River Kem, and followed it to

the Enisei. There, on the low left bank of the river, they built an ostrog, Eniseisk.

The situation, in a swampy area, was unattractive, but within a short time this

settlement completely overshadowed Ketsk as a frontier outpost and itself became a

base for expansion.

Eniseisk was at first administered by boyar-sons sent from Tobolsk, but in 1 623 was

placed under a voevoda. Before the end of 1 6 9, Albychev and Rukin sent cossacks to

the Upper Tunguska to collect yasak.

MANGAZEIANS EXPLORE THE LOWER LENA

Meanwhile, men from Mangazeia had continued to explore the lower Enisei and its

eastern tributaries. As sable and beaver become scarce along the Taz and lower Enisei,

the Mangazeians had increased their efforts on the Lower and Stony Tunguska rivers.

During the years 1 62 -25 they collected large amounts of yasak. Some natives had

sable coats and even used sables as foot pads on their skin.

The Russains decided that the Tungus could use cheaper furs for themselves, so

they confiskated even worn sable coats and the sable pelts on the skin, recommending

the use of reindeer skin instead.

On the Stony Tunguska, about 1 620 the men from Mangazeia were told by the

Tungus of another large river to the east, which was abundantly stocked with sables of
